NCERT books

edited November 2012 in Miscellaneous
Dear friends i'm trying hard to find old editions of NCERT books. I've downloaded new edition books from NCERT site. Will these new edition books are sufficient or should I refer only old edition books? Mrunal sir has suggested in his strategy write up to go for new edition but many has written to study old edition. So i'm confused. Please give your valuable suggestions..

  • no need of the old ncert books ! there is no need of the old ncert books as the UPSC stopped asking only factual questions.
  • New editions r unimpressive @prathap. i bot them n was highly disapointed that i decided not to go through ncert books. You can follow standard textbooks instead of ncert's.
  • @Abhijeet357.. Thanks for your suggestion
    @sathish..I'm studying pdf formats of new ncert. While studying a thought whether i'm studying right books or not came to my mind. Thanks for sharing your experience.
  • Is reading of ncert books necessary..? Or we can directly strt with std books??
  • @Pranith.. I'm reading these books (new edition) just to get some idea about the subjects. In the above comment @Sathish sir has suggested to start with standard books. He has cleared prelims and written mains this time. Finally whether to read or not is left to us. If you've started serious preparation and if you have short of time then its better to go for textbooks or coaching classes notes. No need to worry if you wont get old editions. So how is your preparation?

    @Sathish sir and others.. i'm planning to buy coaching classes study material. I came across two words class notes and printed notes. So which one should i prefer? If anyone having any idea about this please do ans me.
  • @prathap
    I haven't bot any study material as such. But heard that class notes is better. It is something that is thought in class i guess. for standard books, you can visit vajiram site.

    @Pranith
    It is not necessary 2 read ncert. If i could clear prelims without reading them, any1 can.
  • @Sathish.. Sir thank you.. :-)
  • @prathap Exactly for which subjects are you looking for NCERT books? I would suggest you to take a look at the list of essential books for civil services prelims. They are more than enough for your preparation along with at least one newspaper and one magazine.

    You only need NCERT, if at all to study a few last chapters in biology to cover the bio-diversity chapters.

    Solving past 10 years questions is mandatory. And if you are able to answer the questions on environment from the previous year questions (Like Mansar Convention etc.), you are reading the right material. These are some of the questions that get repeated. Even in the new pattern. Just personal opinion, which has worked for me and a no. of other candidates year after year.

    @Neyawn.. sir actually i studied history geography long ago in my 10th class. Mine was state syllabus which is not much similar to CBSE. So i thought of starting from basics which i mean from ncert of history and geography. I'm following the same list given by you. I'm bit confused about geography part.. So please guide me regard this..
