As per the UPSC-2014 notification,it states that "Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics".So, I guess a more wider preparation is needed in this paper as we need to prepare several topics more solidly. It would be better if seniors can throw some light on strategy one should adapt to tackle this change in essay paper.

Anyway, coming back to the issue at hand, I think it's a good thing that multiple essays are going to be included. That means not straying off the course too much, writing concise and comprehensive essays and being able to balance out the paper even if one of the essays is not to your satisfaction.
