What is Glacier Retreat ?

Can anyone explain Glacier Retreat ? and difference b/w normal glacier movement & retreat. Thanks.

  • In simple words G.retreat is the movement of glacier due to melting of ice.

    In normal advancing glacier rate of accumulation of ice is either equal to rate of melting or more.In other words there is no shrinking of glacier in normal movement due to melting.

    So retreat occurs when glaciers starts shrinking and it has an adverse effect on climate.

    There are number of models of G. retreat if one wants to study the whole mechanism.
  • @vkk So in Glacier advance, there will be more accumulation of ice than melt. And in retreat more melt than accumulation. Thanks :)

  • Glacial retreat is the recession of a glacier. it becomes smaller and smaller. In it place it leaves morraines. Using these morraines we can tell how big the glacier used to be compared to its present size.
