[Book Review] Social Problems In India / Indian Society - Ram Ahuja

edited January 2014 in Miscellaneous
Hi Buddies,
I am going to buy 02 books- Social Problems In India and Indian Society, authored by Ram Ahuja. These books will cover following topics from the syllabus of GS 1.

1. Salient features of Indian Society
2. Basic understanding of Indian Society, social problems and Globalization
3. Effect of Globalization on Indian Society

Above books are very old and last published on 1997. No revised edition is available in the market. Still some IAS aspirants are refering it.
I am in dilemma whether I should go for it or not because after 1997 there is no updation in the content of these books. Indian Society has been changed in a big way since 1997, so what does it mean to buy older version of books to understand Indian Society?

Figures are deprecated ones but facts are still relevant .. :D .. This is India , we are still analyzing and assessing how to overcome challenges faced by our nation .. . This will continue even after 100 years and this will make Ram Ahuja's book still an afresh reading experience .. ;)

Hmm but is there any other good book available for this topic ?

There should be , but i'm not aware of it .. I deal basics with IGNOU materials and supplement with newspapers , epw, frontline[a bit] , etc .. There is no dearth of materials for this topic . Even mere Google search could land you in gold mine .. :)>-

    Thanks buddy !!

Can you specify which IGNOU materials you refer for this ?

Ram Ahuja is a good enough book for the GS-I/II social justice topics and also the essay. You won't find that any question can be directly answered using this book, but this will give you a lot of valuable complementary information on various topics. Making extensive notes from this will not be necessary, study selective topics and mark useful things in the book itself.

    Some other good books:
    - India Working - Essays on Society and Economy
    - Women in Indian Society - Neera Desai, Usha Thakkar
  • I think currently IGNOU had issue with copyrights , and they dont help you to download the contents . I'd materials of sociology [hardcopy gifted by friend ] and of course I'm having backing of Political Science [currently I stick to literature ] . So this areas are my favorites ..
