From My side.. 11 12 hours studies are only possible for max 20 25 days. Throughout the year, 6-8 hours quality studies are optimum.

Last 3 4 weeks before prelims or mains or Interview is very much possible due to pressure..

I have Not , its my personal view, infered by various HR theories and human mental capacity.
Basically, there is funda of 50/ 60 or 45/ 60.. either one have to sit 20 % extra or 33% extra... so 8 hours quality sitting means either 10 hours on table or 11 hours on table...
12 hours means 15 hours on table to 16 hours on table....

Now I think u got me...

bhai 8 hours study bole to 8 hours table pe baitna nahi hota

no body can sit 16 hours on table throughout the year... sona , khana , pina , tatti  ,doat se tp, forumias or Fb/insta me 9 hours jata hi hai... rahta bas 15 hours hath me.. usme se jo jitna nikale uski capacity or bolbacchan

Many HR theories have suggested optimum working hours, be it academic or professional. Human mind can work efficiently for max 8 hours in one activity. Above that efficiency curve may hamper.

UPSC is one activity i.e study - mind exercise.

whatever and whichever topper I have hear, all suggest max 6 to 8 hours, generally.. every body do above 12 hours 3 weeks b4 exams
  • Exercise in the evening outside or do yoga for 30 mins.

    +1

Way back in the period of 2007-2014 was very passionate about coding and building nee apps.

I would sit in a single posture for fifteen hours straight without taking a break , as I was addicted to it. There were multiple occasions where I had a frozen shoulder + neck and after the fifteen hour stretch , I could not move my upper body at all , not one bit. I would have to be picked up as I was by three four friends , fearing a paralysis , until I came to know it was muscle spasm and two injections in the arm muscle would defeeeze it.

This happened to me more than once.

Having said that, people can do coding for 8-10-12 hours at a stretch because it’s challenging and you get immediate results , just like gaming.

But studying for those many hours, especially for competitive examination , in my opinion isn’t not possible.

I met @ ashes few months back . He had I think rank 9 and is now SDM somewhere in UP. He said , I don’t know how people study less. I used to study 10 hours + even during IIT as well as Civils .

Anyway, so yesterday people do study 10- 12 hours a day.

One way to achieve it is to study in slots of 3 or four hours - yes and take power naps in between.

You can use guided meditation apps or just practice shavasan .

Another is to divide the day into two. So you can like sleep early , like 9am and wake up at 2am - study for five six hours. In the morning write some test and have 3 hours of sleep in afternoon and again study for 3-4 hours in the afternoon /evening.

I used these strategies to get 96% marks in boards ( I later realised One didn’t need to study so much for boards! )

I still break my day into two when I have to finish / do large amount of reading in a short span of time.

You can do so if you do not have a problem of waking up early . I was trained since childhood to wake up at 4am and read the newspaper by 7am since class 2 ( Parents were strict ), so morning hours are not a problem for me. ( Vice Versa , I cannot keep my eyes open after 1am , no matter what - even with group of friends and everyone else is wide awake )

If you are planning to do this for Prelims , I think it is good idea. Prelims requires intense study - that is more hours per day and more and spending more energy per hour.- at least in the last days.

Abnormal study hours cannot be sustained throughout the year and should be done for few weeks / months as per demand of time .

  • P.S. I have shared what I have done practically without overstating anything. I have not gone into the science of it, and it’s possibility. I just did it because I had to do it.

Here is a hack I devised, which I have been utilizing for some time:

    1. I keep a diary.
    2. Each day, I start by writing the date on top-left.
    3. In front of date, I mark 12 dashes ( - - - - - - - - - - - - )
    4. Then write the to do's. This is what I wrote today:
    -Newspaper
    -Economic Survey 50
    -DD Basu 50

In front of each today, write the time as you start that activity, and as you finish it write the closing time. Fortasks that take longer, I take a break after a complete hour or a multiple of it. The idea is to devote hours. After each additional hour or after one task convert the dashes into plus like.

At teh end of day your list could look like this:

    06/04/2018 ( + + + + + + + + - - - -) 8:30 hours

-Newspaper (09:00 - 10:00) I count it as one hour irrespective of time taken
    -ES (10:40 - 12:40)(12:55 - 13:55)(14:30-16-30) - 50/50
    -DDB (18:00 - 19:30) (19:45 - 20:45) 30/50

p.s. I count daydreaming as well in that. Slogging in hours regularly eventually reduces daydreaming. I try to clock hours. Some days are better, some worse, others pathetic. Ideally I should have shared it after achieving more consistency. But I still shared for if it helps you, what's the harm. For record I have been into it for 25 days. It helped cure lethargy.

Hours don't matter.. and don't be in that impression that studying 12 hours will sail you.. make to do list, prioritise stuffs and importantly execute them.. as for prelim my to do involves reading 50 pages for static and 30 pages for current with 100 mcqs daily and one hour CSAT.. generally 7 8 hours men ho jaata hai... I hope you got the point..
