stupa symbolises basically Buddha in meditation - the base representing legs spread in lotus position, the middle portion - the main body of stupa - denotes his upper body, while the crowing post with progressively rising chhatra denotes advancing stages of nirvana. And nirvana itself means becoming zero (shunya) in the sense of collapse of worldliness and desires. So stupa denotes this journey to and attainment of nirvana. While Mahaparinirvan is the event of Buddha's death, and the encased mortal remains of Buddha or other monks at the core of stupa signifies Mahaparinirvaan as well.
