Why do guys underestimate women?

Many times, I have seen guys underestimate women. Especially in the upsc preparation area. They will either try to talk over girls, try to diminish their achievements, or just refute anything they say. It appears very demeaning and condescending. The girls are left thinking what wrong they said or did when in fact they were right.
Is this because of their background or way they were brought up or just their personal egoistic nature? What are the reasons and when will this end?
This is a very important topic because apart from friends, these men are in some cases, brothers, fathers, boyfriends, husbands, etc. Ultimately, this leads to major conflicts and in some cases, the girls go into depression or permanently lose confidence in themselves.
Would really like inputs from men and women on this topic.

If you come across such people, I suggest that you maintain your distance from such species, i.e. if you want to retain your sanity. Stick to those who strengthen you, and love you for who you are. I'm saying this after trying every way to 'reform' such people, or change their mindset. In the end, it was all in vain.
Why they do so is beyond my comprehension.

Hmmm... And u think I'll make a discussion thread for this based on only my experience? Also, u think I've met just 2-3 guys in 28 years?
Its fine though. I dont expect even one guy to agree with what I've said. But I'm open to surprises.

Thats true. But the thing is, it troubles me how so many girls are going through this and keep trying to find fault in themselves or 'correct their behaviour' to make relationships work. And considering that Ias aspirants have such behaviour, its disconcerting as to what the future holds.
