hey, if u r very much interested(should be able to do continuously for hours a day) and good at Maths then compare CSE optional Maths syllabus with ur college curriculum and set ur optional as Maths(major task in preparation), then stress more on common areas.as GS turned very wide it is better to start GS preparation in parallel with optional. Initially it's better to know about political system in India before starting GS preparation.once done i suggest to read 1)NCERT-8th social science-civics 2)NCERT-9th social science-political science 3) " -10th " " " " 4) " -11th political science - Indian constitution at work 5) " -12th political science - politics in India since independence once u completed u can proceed with either geography or economics or history as ur wish. have a good start "ALL THE BEST"
@Shashank_Patir ..well,buddy u are on the right track i must say..2017 is a very long time.u must not lose enthusiasm in your studies.secondly being regular with the hindu and the pd will definitely hone your skills.within these year i think u wll be able to complete all the relevant ncerts and maybe start following the standard books for gs from next yr i.e. 2014..u can navigate through the threads for the relevant standard books and u can surely complete them easily as the time u have.regarding your optional which is maths i hope u are well confident with it then keep studying it as u will have to study for your graduation and it will maintain your tempo.upsc may or might not keep the optional which we have as of now but it is no harm preparing your optional.one advantage u have that by the end of your final year if u play it right then u will be able to complete the gs properly twice which is a great boost to your preparation by the time u will appear..just be regular and consistent..enjoy studies,that is the trick.. >-
Thanks bro. I want to build up my basics till 12th NCERT. On completion, will proceed to standard books. And, about my optional. I think maths will be good for me. Still, will evaluate my aptitude and if not well enough, will choose geography. My second favourite. ;;)
So in general I want to give this advice to college going students -
1. If you are able to decide, what you want to do in your life till penultimate year of your college, you will save a lot of time. While deciding be practical, there is lot of conundrum these days about follow your passion. Truth is dream job you are looking for may not exist, and you may end up wasting 2 - 3 important years of your life like I did.
2. Now if you have decided that your dream job is civil services then jump into the preparation ASAP. The older you get the tougher it will become to study peacefully. I left my job 3 months back, and I am going through the most mentally tumultuous phase of my life.
3. Don't spread your preparation over 2 - 3 years. Make your first shot the best shot. Otherwise you will get bored, intensity of study will decline.
4. Finish static portion of the syllabus first. Yes! Reading The Hindu gives you the feeling of becoming an intellectual but you intellecuals are not required in the exam. Start making notes only before 1 years from the prelims.
5. In the penultimate year of the college be done with all the very basic books, like NCERTs, Laxmikant, Ramesh Singh, Spectrum's history etc.
6. Utilize your summer vacation judiciously. Try to finish all your final year project/thesis work 6 months before prelims. And obviously higher priority will be give to UPSC.
7. More advanced material should be read in the final year.
8. Start preparing for prelims 3 months before. And Yes!! It can be cleared. There is a thread on this forum only. Search it and follow it religiously. Be determined. My friend cleared while working in Microsoft!! And I couldn't because I was not determined.
9. If your prelims went well, start preparing for the mains ASAP.
10. Generally people are able to clear prelims with college. If you are lucky enough you may get a name in the final list as well. But the point is you did not waste any time this year. So probability of getting selected in second chance will be really high.
but still i would advise u to keep a check on the link i had pasted above on the major discussions which provides a quick lookup..u can bookmark it..u can always turn to it when in doubt..
