Nritta, Nritya and Natya are the three Ns of Bharatanatyam (and also the birth-right of every second girl born south of the Vindhyas)!
Nritta - The most basic element of the classical form - the synchronized movements of legs and feet, arms and hands, set to a rhythm and constant beats ( which can often be very complicated and even follow geometric patterns). Basically, what you see classical dancers do on a count of 1, 2, 3, 4 ad infinitum.
Nritya - This is not mere movement - but that additional aspect of dance which combines gestures and poses using hands and fingers (hastamudras) and the body itself, and facial expressions (abhinaya).
Natya - As is obvious from the name, this is a more dramatic form of the dance- where dancers use both nritta (i.e. rhythmic movements) and nritya (i.e. gestures and expressions) to assume a role or a character, and tell the story.
Also, if you can tolerate the stunned expressions of Mohanlal and his friends, sample this incredible dance sequence from one of the most beautiful women in Indian Cinema. Skip to 3: 45 if it gets too much for you!
