Agreed. Positive sense 1. Discipline is against the curious nature of mind. Mind should be allowed to wonder. Negative sense 2. Discipline is about controlling your mind. A rebel should rebel not just against larger society but normal nature of mind also.
Self-respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself.
Self respect yes when one knows what one expects of oneself and gets that in a planned manner. That shows respect for one's aspirations and ideas.
The sense of dignity may not grow with the ability to say no. It may include saying no to things you want to do apart from the larger goal and hence feeling of discontent.
