To join or not to join. (considering the costs [ monetary and otherwise], quality of answer checking and feedback, time taken to check the answers, if a test actually mimics the actual exam scenario, et.al.)

u cannot swim just by reading how to swim on wikipaedia. writing test is like to be in water to actually learn swimming.It certainly trains ur brain about how to organise ur thoughts in short time to write brilliant answers. but some people join multiple tests ending not completing any. join one test series and attend all tests.

i suggest u to buy them from market and write at home....dost banalo aur aapas mein check kaRLO..nahi to self evaluation karlo.
This is what a topper told on Quora - "I was a sketchy sort of guy when it came laying out schedules and sticking to them. But it did not hurt me to have clear ideas of timelines and ,in general, giving the odd test that painfully showed me reality."

Own writing practice in timed surroundings with questions from past papers or good websites can also do just fine but I think only a handful can be that disciplined. Most people can focus only when their asses are actually on fire.
Costs are too high. Feedback shouldn't be taken seriously.
If it was before prelims perhaps taking a year long test series was beneficial w.r.t to cost. But now since only one month is left, better join test series only after prelims result. IMO in the meantime self practice would do.
Feedback will not be upto the mark as the tests are mostly checked by aspirants who work part time with the institutes. And with only a few months left for Mains, the quality of feedback will be greatly compromised.
But writing the tests will be helpful. It will benefit you more if you have a group of serious aspirants with whom you can discuss the questions after having written the test.
So, buy one set of test series from the market itself.
But make sure you stick to the schedule. You can enlist the help of friends and family to hold you accountable if you fail to write a test on the given date or time.
Friends what about insights 200 rs mains test series? If practice is what we are really looking for, isn't it the best option ? But last year their synopsis was not that good. But still I feel yahi sahi rahega. Baaki har jaga kaafi costly hai. What's your opinion friends?
So, buy one set of test series from the market itself.
But make sure you stick to the schedule. You can enlist the help of friends and family to hold you accountable if you fail to write a test on the given date or time.
