What is the Expected Cut off for UPSC Prelims 2017?

  • @santra if i may humbly, i have one very very important suggestion.

What should be the remedy (if ambiguity is established), so that "no aspirant" suffers from the "relief granted by this PIL"?

Case 1 : In a question, Multiple options are correct.

In case of 2 options being correct, students who marked those two options should only be granted marks. Students who dint attempt should not be given any marks in this question. This ensures fair treatment for everyone. Similarly for 3 options being correct and all options being correct.

Case 2 : Faulty question or All options being wrong or unfit.

No marks should be granted for this question and this question should be discarded from the number of questions.
Suppose 1 question is dropped. That would make cutoff to be out of 198 marks.

How ever there is a fault. Every aspirant writes the exam expecting 100 fair questions. So if one question is dropped, it reduces the chance of that aspirant to qualify.

Example of this, Suppose the cutoff is 102 and the aspirant is scoring 102 with the ambiguous question according to UPSC key. Now after this PIL relief, his score will get reduced to 100 and he may not qualify the exam. If he had one more "Fair" question, who knows he may have got that one correct and qualified.

In this case 2, to make it fair for everyone, the intake for mains should be increased corresponding to the number of questions dropped. this will offset the genuine aspirants missing out issue.

Please "plead" for only these two cases. If for case 2, extra marks is granted for everyone, then it would be advantageous for those who dint attempt that question at all. So please please consider only the above two cases only. This will ensure no counter PILs are filed in this matter in future.

PS, i am sorry if you have already considered this. I was already asleep when these thoughts started to come in my mind, so sharing at such an odd hour. Goodnight!

@anyone who knows santra, please make sure he reads this comment before going to court. Kindly request you to share this comment with him.
    @smartman or anyone.
Very good post. I just want to add that in IIT JEE case 2017 supreme court found faults with the allotment of bonus marks to all candidates for wrong questions in paper. Everyone was alloted marks for those questions wether one attempted correctly, incorrectly or didnt attempt at all. However, since the admissions were already done amd JEE authorities expressed inability to reconduct exam, SC only admonished them and gave a warning not to repeat such thing again. In UPSC case now, dropping controversial questions is akin to giving bonus marks to everyone. Plus, there is no issue of admissions already done here like IITJEE. Let's see what SC does. I think, if PIL is admitted it will ask UPSC to first file a response.

I found 2 pieces of news over internet. One on which SC went with its earlier decision of 2005 asking IITJEE authorities not to award bonus marks to candidates who didnt attempt these questions. https://www.google.co.in/amp/indianexpress.com/article/education/josaa-nic-in-iit-jee-advanced-2017-supreme-court-gives-green-signal-for-counselling-process-bonus-marks-4744137/lite/

And other that mentions it found faults with awarding bonus marks method

    https://www.google.co.in/amp/m.timesofindia.com/india/iit-decision-to-award-bonus-marks-for-wrong-question-comes-under-sc-scanner/amp_articleshow/59388315.cms

So if @santra is able to establish that some questions were doubtful or wrong, then we may expect that bonus marks might be awarded only to those who attempted these questions and not everyone and result might get little delayed but this is just an educated guess. Lets see what happens.
  • Ab sala lag rha he ki ye new lowliness ki baat sunke upsc next year aisa paper set na kare ki 2018 attempters ki fat ke hath me aa Jaye!!!

Yeh bhi toh ho sakta Hai ki UPSC aukaat mein aa jaaye aur accha paper with exact answer set kare.
  • Wow! Finally nobody giving a flying f*ck to Fuhrer. He must be red due to lack of attention. :D
  • ek PIL mai bhi soch raha hu dalu...Mains exam ke regarding...koi transparency nahi hai....syllubus bus dikhane ke liye hai...chahe jitna pad lo 80% qsn exam me pahli bar dikhta hai...marks kam ya zyada q mile...lifelong pata nahi chalta...upsc university exam ki tarah hona chahiye..10 qsn guess kar lo usi me se ayega..aur isse "fair and trnasparency"bhi badhegi...mazzak thodi hai...almost every state psc has destroyed due to suxh PIL giri...aspirant netao ka help leke activist ban jaate hai..aur pre mains interview apponintment ....finaly court hi decide karta hai..lagta hai yahi syndrome yaha bhi hone wala hai...

Sab ke sab daal do PIL,
dkha do ki If exam doesnt go our way, we know how to satisfy our ego. UPSC ki ye mjaal k questions tough daale....abhi PIL daalta hu :D
  • I see a number of people highly concerned with the PIL issue, I mean they consider it a height of conspiracy since the Appellant has 102.xx marks.

First things first. Prelims has got nothing to do with your knowledge, case in hand are the yesteryear toppers. Only a handful scored at least 8 marks ( 3 questions) above cutoff and qualified. Another day, they would have been repeating prelims

UPSC needs transparency. It has become the need of the hour. World class exams like GRE provide scores the same day, so if not scores provide the answer key. At least.

All those who are cursing the PIL fall into 2 categories-
    1. People who have (just as I had mentioned earlier 60 answer and 40 C marking syndrome) - and they now are in 120+ range. Worry not guys, you will be weeded out in mains
    2. People who have scored very high and are genuinely disturbed. Now, I can only say, for majority welfare, accept it. If something worthwhile happens then it will serve the good of all.
