In such case science/technical subject will perform way better
I think nahi hui.. thtz y u seein a lot of 300 + in geo/ pub ad where as a few in sci kinda subj. (remember tht new chmn is history phd..). may we shud write to upsc and ask if there is any change in marking methology

Not necessary for a technical subject to perform better. Any optional which was liberally marked this time has performed amazing (Ex: Pol science, geography, public admin, anthropology). Whereas subjects which were not liberally marked have suffered and the average scores in these have been very less (Example: Law, Philosophy).
2016 was basically the year when your fate was sealed the moment you took your optional. It is not necessary that the trend will be repeated the next year, but at least for 2016 people from a few select optional's were extremely fortunate. Here are a few screencaps of political science to show the mind boggling marks received by them.
It's highly unlikely that there was any scaling because not a single person from philosophy or law has scored above 300, average scores are below 240. Whereas in the high scoring optionals the average has been near 270-280 (with the good candidates getting upwards of 320).
I personally think this is extremely unfair. But what can we do.
