The average scores required in different papers to get a decent rank (within 100 to 300 range may be) Notes: It's highly generalised analysis based on the marks obtained by various candidates.
Essay - 130-140 GS - 420-430 Optional - min 300 PT -170. Total - 1030.
PT mark is almost unpredictable even after interview (130 to 170 variations).
Difference between written vut off and final cut off is ~ 200. That means the person cleared written with border marks - negligible chance to get a rank even in bottom.
Essay many scoring 140s (benchmark) Optional min 300, goes to 350 also. If u r exceptional in optional subject or ur optional is highly rewarding in that year, there is some leeway with GS marks ( 400 - 430).
If ur optional is not that much rewarding (below 250), even good scores in Essay, GS ll only take u till PT not get even bottom rank. So min 280 marks in optional necessary to get a decent rank.
Poora paper karke aao baaki sab kismat pe chhod do. Only mantra I think.
GS n optional me jitne aapne kahe utne laya...PR essay ne bahar krdiya just 107...abhi tk itne kum kisi ke nahi dkhe..last year 120 aageye the. Is bar aur practice n aur better kiya. Still. Thus nothing is predictable
You Guys wont believe but i thought i would fail in hindi.. the paper went so pathetic and i was almost jittering and about to cry.. i dont know who checked my copy.. i seriously doubt UPSC's manner of evaluation..
Same here. I'm from Northeast and I scored 130 by writing wrong Hindi, wrong words, wrong usage of gender, spoken Hindi and not written Hindi... hahahaha... pata nahin kisne chek kiya tha. the one who checked must be a good soul.

bhaiii i was the topper in phy chem in 12th aieee iit ....but mera dimak kaharab ho gaya jo dil ki aawaj ko chodkr logo ko suna ..started socio pre .did not interest ...fir lga literature le lo ..hindi saala waha bhi maja nahi aaya ..fir frustation me saala philo ki coaching lii ..knew it does nt have potential to make me ias ..jayaada se jaayds kuch saal ragda to last rank pahucha dega ....finally starting physics ...ander se lagta hai it can give out of the box marksss.....science has the potential to do miracle ...listen ur abilities ..dont waste time like it did ..,dont think longcourse , shaort course etc chutiyaa baate
