  • mani kaul aur ritwik ghatak ka cinema
  • What is parallel cinema???
  • What is parallel cinema???
In literal sense = "a stream parallel to mainstream commercial cinema."

    Its characterised by realism.
  • While our hobby is parallel cinema, do not belittle mainstream cinema , neither regard Hollywood higher than bollywood.

We can exclude reference that parallel cinema is only for "elites or intellectuals". Never put oneself at higher moral or intellectual pedestal than others.

Buy Satyajit rays book, I'd recommend "our films, their films" as it helps understand history of cinema , roots of parallel cinema. Also read a little about origins of parallel cinema, directors responsible.
  • Any body here who's ever appeared in interview and been asked questions on this?
  • i have put watching educational movies as my hobby, as i didn't want interviewers to give too much leeway in asking question. my understanding on educational movies is about all those movies which have the ability to instill socially and politically desired attitude, values and knowledge in common citizen.

therefore " PINK" with strong message about hidden gender biases invoke or encourage people to introspect. similarly 3 IDIOT highlight importance of being innovative and discourage rote learning. therefore these movies have potential to inspire large number of common citizen, so i consider them under the ambit of educational movies.

so my question is, can i consider above as educational movies or there is some other kind of movies that are called educational movies.
  • reviving
    ..
  • Though not important for interview but still an academic question.

Does cinema reflect the reality of the society or is it the opposite i.e. society is shaped by the movies?

What role has parallel cinema performed in societal transformation? Cite some examples.
  • Q1) Why parallel Movies are struggling to sustain in modern era of commercial Movies and whats the future of it.
    1. Competition with mainstream commercial cinema
    2. Insufficient funding and financial resources
    3. Small viewership. Only elite intellectual sections of society understand them. ( My opinion. Discuss on this)
    4. Lack of their promotion
    5. No exhibition of these in multiplexes
    6. Lack of interest of viewers due to lack of masala/stunt/song etc

Thats why art cinema declining in its pure form (comparing with the times of Satyajit Ray).To maintain its relevance today, it is adapting to needs of present viewership and also taking shelter of commercial cinema as well (eg aligarh, masaan etc)

    PS: personal opinion.
We have to develop a movie Viewing culture first. Two of the states in India, where parallel cinema was most successful were west Bengal and Kerala. One of the reasons behind was the strong film society movement. For example in my home state, Kerala, internationally acclaimed film maker adoor gopalakrishnan, before starting his career as a director, concentrated his attention towards conducting screenings of famous movies with the help of foreign embassies, under his chitralekha film society. In a recent interview, he had equated this viewer sensitization to watching kathakali. To understand kathakali, one needs to learn about its mudras etc. Similarly to understand good cinema, one has to have a basic idea about film making process and an exposure to acclaimed film makers before his college years itself.
( world cinema is my hobby)
  • I would want to be recommended some famous biopics (not the common or IMDB ) ones...preferably in indian languages...(watching biopics is my hobby )...plss
