attempted 500..paper 1.conceptual.u need to have clear understanding of topics..no shalllow knowledge.. paper 2 .. felt socio political generic.u need to apply marx positive liberty negative liberty in answers.dont know how will they mark..overall tougher than lat yr but tough paper has one benefit if u write well u can score more..finger crossed however
@yoga123 can you please share your comments on the papers . How did your papers go ?
Hey @naujawan , it was my first attempt with philo so I can't substantially compare it with last years' papers. But yeah I agree with @sajal89 , shallow knowledge won't work. Even the questions like "is matter a substance in Aristotle's theory" would need good conceptual understanding of this theory of substance which is not "taught" in coaching classes where the focus would be on "form and matter, actuality and potentiality, doctrine of unfoldment". Here one needs to know what exactly does substance mean and why is it not a substance as held by some Ancient Greek philosophers? The stuff of coaching would be covered too in the paper but only after one has answered the main question well. This is just an example. There were several other questions too.
And also, philo has gone beyond the books like CD Sharma and D&C. Questions like jain's tattavartha about which no one had any idea..they are bound to cause discomfort for exam takers in 2017 coz they would try to cover more topics and the commonly called "short syllabus" of philo just got wide open! It will raise the question of sources to refer to, and the moment people add new books to their studies, upsc would pick just another book to mess with us!
Paper ii religion part was good in the sense that there was a lot of stuff to write. However, It was "hatke" (stood out) from previous years when questions were more direct. Socio pol was as vague as ever.
@yoga123 So what would u suggest..reference material ,strategy for next yr mains
@Dodo d I'm not quite sure about how to proceed from now onwards. I was totally dependent on coaching + 2 of my friends who helped me in understanding basic stuff which helped in d exam or so I hope. A comprehensive analysis would be required to strategize further. Haven't done that yet.
wont claim to b an xpert bthaving xprnc of philo optional fr 4yrs what i felt is dat u just dnt read and mug up notes..need to internalise concepts.fr eg those comparision based questns there can b 1000such questns as philosophy is all abt comparision between diff philosophies..questns like pure concepts..if u dnt know dat concept are cat of understandings andv percepts are sensations u cant write them.. .so u need to understand d cncpts well.so dat u can write points den and dere.odd questns like tattvartha ll b always dere...if u hv completed ur syllabus well u can safely skip such questns..one or two odd questns would b dere always..covering the whole syllabus properly is important
Thanks @yoga123 .. the short syllabus is a myth , it's depth what Upsc has moved to with this paper and in philosophy that is a huge task to understand and express .. hoping the correction is not very strict
Mera ye manna hai k writing zyada krna chahiye past 10 years k papers se..n notes + internet use krke..bulky books padna option nahi hai mere liye....ab tak contemporary me simple hi puch rhe hai..Indian me CD Sharma se hi inhone notes vanaya hai..khali chote topics bhi achese krna chahiye...
philosophy ha ha.. pata nahi chalta kab kya hoga isme.. it was my 4th attempt and paper 2 was nightmare for me dont know if will cross even 60-70 marks or not. 1st attempt got 240 and it was one of the higest marks in 2013 but real me i did not know much at that time just mugged up notes as i had taken coaching between pre and mains.. then in 2014 got 270 again it was a good score that year but my badluck in interview ruined my chances to qualify. in 2015 got only 207 in philo and essay within 100..
but this year i dont know what happen in paper 2. even 200bhi paar kar jaau to baadi baat hogi..
