Media is indeed the fourth pillar of democracy ONLY IF it presents an unbiased, non-partisan-ed and and analytical view which acts as a review mechanism for the government to mend its ways if things go down south. Unfortunately, this is not the case with Indian media. Be it TIMES NOW or NDTV, what we consume is utter bull, manufactured dissent a.k.a presstitution against a party, be it any, which is not in its good books OR is not funding the channel. Now, as media can reach millions at once, broadcasting news without vetting it first can easily trigger some untoward situation against the interest of a nation/state. Also broadcasting some news/information which is prohibited under some act passed by the legislature of that nation is a total violation of article 19(2) of our constitution, IMO.
Now the ministry had invoked the Cable Television Networks Amendment Rules, 2015 which prohibit live coverage of any anti terrorist operation by security forces and restrict media coverage to periodic briefing only by some designated officer till that operation continues. There is a difference between live coverage and simple reportage.
The job of the media is to be an objective observer , to speak the truth, to question and to investigate in some cases. Not referring to this particular case but IF a channel crosses all limits and broadcasts some news which is a potential threat to our democracy, the government can/should ban that show. It is high time the media fathoms its role in this democracy and evolves into something responsible which it is not, in its present form!
Even prior to the current debate about patankot coverage there were apprehensions about ndtv's role in 26/11 where it was accused of telecasting security positions and actions. Many eyebrows were raised then, many from the UPA regime.26/11 was an eye opener and many intelligence people have openly brought to light the lapses therein by the media. Now the offence seems to be repeated, many jawans martyred and many injured. So what is needed now is not to question the ban but a STRICT AND IMPARTIAL SCRUTINY OF THE PATHANKOT TELECAST to see if any breach of conduct by the TV media during the operation. Its the relevance of the evidence that should be the talking point.
And its not just ndtv. other channels may also be culprit. 2 assam channels have also been banned
Is it Naxalite Deshdrohi Tele Vision ? I read somewhere Pranoy Roy is brother of Prakash Karat and it's funding is from Gospel of charity, a staunch Spanish communist organization. This organization is tilted towards pakistan as it's one channel has been made free to air there.*
*Just confirming, i myself heard all these, so skeptical.

**Grabs my popcorn**
You are the culinary equivalent of Donald Trump. He is a man who grabs women (by their cats). You are a burger who grabs popcorn. Mods, ban this guy.
BJP has always had a habit of shooting itself in the foot. This is not an isolated instance. Nirbhaya ban, meat ban, NGO ban, porn ban, torrent ban, and now this. This solves nothing. Such things cause more harm than good especially to our global image. How does a one day ban help in de-compromising national security, that too post-facto. One day ban just trivializes our national security commitment. Take stern action if some wrong doing is proved. Else, there are plenty of things to do.
As far as news channels go, none is responsible. Zee and NDTV are two sides of the same coin. And no matter what, the coin stays in the pockets of the politicians.
@ Jaime_Lannister Torrent bhi Bjp walo ne ban Kiya????
Technically none of them has been done by BJP walas. PS: Anyone who thinks that my post was pro some party or anti some party has missed the point entirely.
No Iam seriously asking, torrent?? Did govt ban it?? Waise torrent promotes piracy
Indian Express's Editor in chief Raj Kamal Jha's speech talking about journalism nowadays and the govt. role Now that's a courageous thing to do in front of our PM
There is nothing courageous about what he said, instead of bringing out real facts on countering modi's earlier comments on the same platform about role that media needs to play in "maintaining the unity and integrity of the nation", he choose to taunt on a personal level. That is nothing but pure grudge(oh btw, he is the cousin of mr sanjay jha of INC).
What exactly does he mean by selfie journalism under the veil of national flag? Is PM going there to do media's job or to promote country's interests? I mean if one does not have anything to counter, then take a shot on someone's personal habits like taking a selfie. hilarious to say the least.
Criticism is a badge of honor, True it applies to both. When modi criticized the role of media for unnecessarily sensationalizing news, he gave them a badge of honor, On the other hand what did jha do? He dint criticize modi, He insulted him and on a personal level.
Talks about how everything has gone wrong after the govt changes, Obviously shows his leanings and that is certainly not a quality of a good journalist.
Calling names like remote control and stuff, that is absolutely low class thinking.
Infact, He has to be proud that our honorable PM did not choose to do anything when he went overboard with his personal taunts. He just stayed calmly and maintained his dignity, He was "tolerant". Imagine what would have happened if someone had the said the same to you know who.
Criticizing is perfectly fine, but insulting is not. Lets be constructive in our thinking process.
It's completely right and justified. The elected govt. of the day, popularly elected with absolute majority, took an executive decision in adherence to law of the land.
Somehow the whole world comfortably overlooks China where it's a crime to publicly criticize 'party policies'; where dissent is severly punished and where writers like Liu Xiaobo and Liu Yiwu are thrown in jail for merely penning poems !!
An example shud be made of NDTV and its fashionable partisan journalism. There's already a tax evasion and FCRA case against it of the tune of 20000 crore!!
I wud personally prefer garage selling the whole media group and throwing its promoters in jail.
