Dear forumias

I am a b.tech student taking cse first time and have interest in both maths and sociology. So which subject as optional would be beneficial for me and for that subject, which coaching would be best? Plz suggest

    Dear forumias

There is no "forumias" answering your questions, but people can!

Choosing Optional in as tricky or as easy as you make it. There are both rational and irrational reasoning that go behind choosing an optional.

If you are interested in Mathematics, you can begin by taking a look at Mathematics previous years papers and see if they make sense to you.

A second thing that you can do is that study a chapter and then see of questions make sense to you.

@ tywin on the forum has secured Rank 13 this year and he had Maths optional. However, he does admit that he had Maths optional is not without a minimum preparation of 6-8 months and requires rigorous preparation.

In terms of coaching, I am not aware of any coaching apart from IMS - which has mixed to decent reviews on the forum, but thats the only one. You may have to at least join the Test Series. Again, subjects like Maths will require some guidance, while subjects like Sociology can be done by self if you get 2-3 notes and read the standard notes.

You can refer to this article and this article for Sociology.

Note that, for some reason Shilpi Mittal on the Forum secured Rank 198 with Maths Optional, but chose to take up Philosophy for her next attempt.. You will have to make your own choices.

On a personal note, I would say that try reading Sociology. There is a certain joy in doing Humanities subjects which you have never known as an engineer. Subjects like Sociology are genuinely enlightening for someone who has no idea of it.

Hope this helps. this does not confuse you further, because almost everyone takes an Optional based on the advice of someone they trust or know or simply take the Optional which most people are taking OR which has good study material.
  • Actually, "You don't choose any optional. The optional chooses you"

  • Please check previous comments and Use the search box on forum IaS. If you use it, many CSE toppers including @Neyawn have answered this question in detail. Please refer to those
