Want to read a book to improve essay and also for improving answer writing, which i can read during leisure time. Confused between Imagining India by Nandan Nilkeni or Difficulty of being good by Gurucharan Das. Suggestions for other books are also welcome..

Imagining India - Has good ideas and will make you think differently on a lot of things.
The Difficulty of Being Good - Is a good read . If at all you would like to read it for essay/ethics, you may have to memorise some of the fodder stories.
However I wouldn't say that you can use multiple points from the books.
I would recommend you to read Poor economics as well, which would be a much bigger eye opener for anyone looking for why policies are designed the way they are. It has pretty good linkages between Poverty, Malnutrition, Population, Disease, Geographical factors etc.
Both are cool - DoBG provides fodder for ethics based essay and II may provide fodder for India-centric approach. If possible, one should try to read both. DoBG may give you some memorable quotes... do read, specially if you are a mythology follower.

I have read both.

Imagining India may not be that addictive, and you may get stuck somewhere. You will love DoBG and Poor Economics and may remain hooked onto them.
Besides the ideas pushed in Imagining India are , I feel, very mainstream now and may not enthuse you anymore.
If possible, one should try to read both. DoBG may give you some memorable quotes... do read, specially if you are a mythology follower.
