Hi everyone, I am a B Tech passout-2012. I will be appearing CSE-14. I have appeared for JNU MA Sociology entrance and hoping to get through. My optional will be Sociology. What is the weight of MA course while preparing CSE. Will it be effective (Environment and Hostels)? Please throw some light on classes and others and pros and cons?
Well, I can't comment on Sociology but can tell you a bit about JNU.
First thing in JNU there is a huge junta that prepare for civils. You must have heard that there reading room is also called Dholpur house, with seats reserved in perpetuity. So, you can take it both ways. If you actually like studying in a group it might help you. But it can be a huge distraction as well. Other good thing- the spectacular library, but dont get swayed away!
Hostel- depends which one you get. Overall they are so-so. Filthy not because the sweeper doesn't come but bcs students don't wanna live neatly. Your roomie will most probably be a M.Phil or PhD guy. So you can expect academic discussion the whole night.
Environment- Highly sensitive to social- caste, class, gender issues and highly political (espc left). Again both ways- you will learn a lot about society, politics etc, but then again distraction.
Teachers- Excellent, but they treat students who are simultaneously preparing for civils with contempt bcs they are not regular with classes and internals. In any case, Academic work will be highly demanding. Your class might have some of the best brains and they too don't take civils candidates seriously.
My advise would be take admission if you actually want to do an MA, otherwise you might find yourself sailing in two boats, and then the fraudulent 'zero sem' would be the last recourse. Also, take your decision considering the importance of optional vis- a vis GS.
it might be unethical as well because its a highly subsidised university and hence should not be used as a dharamshala. :-B
PS: I left JNU after spending a semester- MA- Geography.
I do not have any idea about JNU as i always prefer DU over JNU.
I am going to do MA from DU .
Pros: It would keep my mood fresh ,would keep myself motivated and reinvigorated ,would be more focused .
Cons: I would have to spend some days of a week in campus ,i will not be getting 16 hours to study, but I believe that qualitative study is more important than quantitative study.
