That is not to analyse previous year papers and prepare according to syllabus and be thorough with current affairs and keep reading newspapers upto fortnight before mains.
2012 pubad... punchi commission, district planning commitee question repeat in 2015. Dalhousie question in 2013 was asked earlier in gs-1. RIN mutiny in gs-1 repeated many times. There are many such things but optional helps a lot.
1. weight of current affairs has increased. 2. questions are easier now as compared to before 3. answer writing is key now = everyone knows answer to most questions, but every1 wont get same marks 4. do past ten years question in optioanl subject 5. practise as many questions as possible for mains 6. make own notes as far as possible 7. prepare issues for mains point of view so that if it comes u are able to answer well 8. for mains , dont go in deep, just do 5-6 points on every topic 9. make a calendar and set a weekly plan for completing syllabus.
Experience from 2 mains.. Some takeaways.. 1.Most of the questions can be mapped to the syllabus and most of them are contemporary and featured in newspapers. So, read newspapers regularly and make revisable notes. 2. Think critically in terms of pros-cons, cause - effect-solution, hurdles, alternatives 3. Link theory to practical. Ex use constitution, sc judgements to support ur answers in gs2 4. Prepare well for most expected questions. This way you will save time for more thoughtful questions during exam. 5. On exam day, Be confident and motivated. This will help u recall and think and not panic at seeing unexpected questions. 6. Don't let your bad performance in one paper affect next papers .Instead, try to make up for the loss in coming papers. Last year, I had done quite well in gs1(92) but after discussion with peers, my confidence got shattered. It reflected in below potential performance in gs2 and gs. So, leave the past and focus on the future papers.
So, Be motivated, have a strategy and work hard and persevere to succeed. Because, you don't want to look back and feel that you could have done better. Either suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of failure. The latter pain is more intense and long lasting!
