  • well ground realities are different, political interference, rowdyism(SP case in Haryana), postings in far-flung areas as punishment, family distance and lots of opportunities in LPG era than subordination
  • Yeah, things are different at ground level where a sadakchap neta of ruling party can scold a kaptaan and threaten him for the transfer.
  • As you said only a few leave IAS in short span of time.
First things first, no intelligent being wants to die unknown.

Exceptions exist. But most of them want the world to remember them even after they are long gone.
So the few ones those who leave might have found a way more effective to achieve that goal. They are ambitious people.
Their numbers are few but they are there.

Now this can be for their well-intentioned purposes or otherwise. We cannot generalise.

This might be called as 'Steve Jobs effect'. Your time is limited, live the way you want to, make a long lasting impact,etc.. They want to reach out to more people to make an impact. To realize their true potential, etc

People like Roman Saini count their days they have lived on this planet. So they know time is limited.(You can find that he has written about it on Quora.)

So the easiest answer is self-expectations and ambitions. Again we cannot generalise. There might be genuine reasons to opt for voluntary retirement.

    1.no home cadre.
    2.politicial interference.
3.reality that administration is not a one man show and he has to take into confidence lot many politicians ,senior ias officers ,state cadre officers and general public at large may frustrate new recruits.
4.The attention and popularity one gets after clearing exam dies as soon as next set of aspirants clear the exam .ex:shah faesal got lot of attention ;everyday a new article about him in newspapers and now the only news i have heard about him is how he lost 75k when his bank account was hacked.
5.some people don't give a fuck whether its ias or anyother high paying corporate job or likewise .
6.some people are highly inspired by salman khan's KICK movie.

It is time to introspect for UPSC.
UPSC exam was never scientific and never unequal....always people toiled and cleared till 2010.
Post 2011....Through the CSAT , many smart people creacked the exam.....Honestly without much preparation. They have made this exam to look like a Formula. They came and won. UPSC thought this is a welcome change with so many young people joining.
Time for UPSC to understand....Those who become IAS with smart work will also not equally respect it ......retain in it.
But those who come from corners of this nation prepare hard to make it ....and once they are there...they will stand against all odds and face it.

P.S : Roman Saini is doing his bit for all the poor students in villages.I respect him.

  • Do watch this how Karnataka chief Secretary runs from media.

  • Just 2 cents:
Being IAS is not an easy thing
Being IAS is not every thing

    So stay hungry,stay foolish.
Many roads lead to Rome , choice is yours.
    RESPECT INDEED.

In a world without economic borders, as imports-exports fiercely compete across trade road routes, the concept of the human brain confining itself to a pre-determined career progression in a nation-state polity, is not only erroneous but also short-sighted.
