Please give some recommendations for general reading which may aid in the preparation or is just good for developing a general perspective. Keep it limited to non fictions from History, Society or something interesting.
Abhi exam khatam hua hai toh kuch alag padha jaye, Bahut hua Laxmikant and Bipan Chandra :-)
"The first Muslim" and "After the Prophet". These two are good, informative and pretty interesting books on Islamic history and one of my favourites
"What's wrong with Pakistan", "The blood telegram" "Magnificent delusions". These 3 books are for avid readers of Pakistan or Indian Pakistan discourse. Plus they may help u in interview.
"Riot politics" Good read if u want to understand how politics, riots and mediated state of India works.
"Steve jobs" biography by renowed writer Walter Isaacson. Though I have not read it but will be my target in next couple of days. Also if u are into economics then u can go for "Capital" By Thomas Piketty and will definitely help u in interview.
Some other books to choose from can be "The colours of the cage" it is first hand short account of how one is harassed by our criminal judicial system. " Our moon has blood clots" and "Curfewed nights". These two are on Kashmir and ull get first hand account from a Kashmiri Pandit and Muslim respectively.
Lastly u can try "The Diary of young girl" by Anne Frank. Is one of highly rated books of all time but ull not get much masala. Nevertheless its fascinating to read the first hand account from a 13 year old. Also go for wilco classic publishers for this book. They provide cheap yet good quality hard bound books and translation is also good. Oh yes one more "Wild swans" by Jung Chang. Its good informative account of communist China during, before and after Mao but without any trappings of a boring history books as basically it's history of China told from perspective of three generations of women.
