Why Eastern Himalayan region is rich in biodiversity and endemicity ?

Comments

  • If you are comparing with Western Himalayas, then the twin factors or temp. and moisture availability comes into play. Eastern Himalaya is at a lower latitude and receives higher rainfall.
  • @cReal

I am talking in absolute terms not in relation with Western Himalayas
  • Eastern Himalayas consists of many ecological regions.
    1. The Eastern Himalayan tundra region, high latitute, snow covered. This is contiguous to the Western Himalayan region, Sikkim etc.
    2. The Arunachal region, above Brahmaputra river, which basically varies from graslands towards the southern edge, to sub tropical towards the northern end.
    3. The sub tropical forests below Brahmaputra river, which is one of the most wettest areas in the world.

Further, between 2 and 3, Brahmaputra river forms a natural barrier which prevents transmission of species across it, thus further enhancing biodiversity.
    4. The pine and rain forests along North East and Myanmaar mountains, which are natural crossroads for species in the Indo-Myanmar, Indo China and Indian regions.

Thus, the high species diversity can be attributed to the variety of ecoregions present and the edge effect. Also, natural barriers such as the Brahmaputra river, mountain chains, led to endemicity in the region.
  • Presence of different climatic conditions.
Closeness to tropic of cancer - So presence tropical forests and grassland, high rainfall and temperature.
High relief - At higher altitudes, temperate forests can be found.
Abundant supply of water from rainfall and glaciers.
Multiple types of soils can be found like alluvial, red, etc.
Low population density so less human interference.
