Doubts regarding Indo-Gangetic Plains ?

A few doubts about Plains ( Geography)
1. Why does long rivers are generally found in Plains ? Eg - Indo-Ganges and US Great plains Mississippi river
2. What would be impact of climate change on Indo-Gangetic Plains ?
3. Why plains are devoid of forest cover ?

TIA

  • 1. It may not be correct to make such an generalization. Rivers flow through all kinds of terrain. Nile river passes through Eastern African Rift valley and Sahara desert, Amazon has its origin in Andes. Even most Indo Gangetic rivers have their origin in Himalayas, and Brahmaputra traverses more distance in Himalayas than in plains.

    2. Climate Change
    a. Initially, more frequent floods as melting of glaciers may increase discharge.
    b. In the long term, drought when the glaciers in Himalayas melt and rivers are no longer perennial.
    c. Eventual decrease in groundwater levels, and impact on agriculture productivity.

    3. Mostly due to man-made activity. Plains are generally well suited for agriculture, so most of the forest cover has been removed to make way for agriculture.

@Wolverine8997 ( difficult user id to tag :P too many wolverines on this forum :( )

I read it somewhere that Long rivers are found mostly in plains ( by river the author might have indicated the middle course i guess)
  • Long rivers are not found in plains. Its vice versa. In Plains, due to absence of a clear slope, rivers meander and take zig-zag course giving it a longer length.

@upsc_cracker Good questions. Can you create one thread per question? Becomes easy to find them?

What would be impact of climate change on Indo-Gangetic Plains ?

    5. Shifting of river course.
    9. Effect on Inland Navigation and fishing.

@Babur sir plz explain point 5 and 9
    little confused in them

sirjee that will create chaos plus it will help future aspirants (when we become something somehow out of this exam) as everything for a particular geographic division covered in a thread

Thoda painful by hai to create 7-8 threads for one topic

Nooo ( The only time where I have used an extra 'o' to emphasize ).

Its better if you ask and discuss exactly one question in a thread. The thread title can be the question itself with some elaboration.

I insist on keeping one thread only for bakar and other threads. It will be easy to search too if you ask a separate question by creating a new thread.

I as a user don't mind having five geography questions on my homepage. What I mind is which coaching to join - and five such threads on my homepage.

Having said that, you are free to do what suits you :)

As per forum rules, you are free to create as many meaningful threads as you like as long as it concerns a study topic and asks a direct question.
