Nepotism and corruption in UPSC; Is it possible ?

Hi guys
In recent times we have been bombarded with news of paper leaks & nepotism (AIPMT, RAS, SSC, VYAPAM, etc.) My question is that is it possible that there is corruption and nepotism prevalent in UPSC. I am having a doubt because the exam process isn't that transparent which one expects from a constitutional body like upsc and also in the forum I have seen marks of various candidates who have performed well in their optional 1 (145/250) but failed miserably in optional 2(13/250) and also sometimes marks given in mains also seem arbitrary ?
What are your views ?

  • there was once a question to some IAS of presence of social evils(casteism, regionalism, religionism) in IAS service ... his reply was "ÏAS are representation of indian elite society, and all the evils in indian society are present here too"
  • a member of commission was forced to resign as he was alleged to show favouritism to one of his relatives in interview and not informing the commission that a particular candidate was his relative....in india, everything is possible.... + optional checking is unfair due to many biases(not corruption but personal bias). + an inspector of police in Delhi was caught cheating with his girlfriend aiding him outside the hall..... so many things are possible with or without the role of commission... + we all know who gets more marks in interview(this is not corruption but a general policy)
  • bhai i feel that there can be no surity that nepotism and favoritism is not there in upsc...upsc is manned by people only...and as human being..they also are subject to deviant conduct...even there are instances of corruption in judiciary...however i think it is relatively less in degree as compared to other institutions og Govt
  • Looking at the issue more realistically, I believe corruption or nepotism or favouratism is very much possible. After all, many members of UPSC had their stints in state public service commissions and we all know how state PSCs function and how clean their selection process is... for example, take a look at the merit list of Haryana PSC and Punjab PSC last year... most of the candidates chosen for civil service and police service are relatives of politicians, bureaucrats and police officers... If state PSCs can continue with such naked violation of merit even after repeated exposes by the media, there is every possibility that 'holy cow' UPSC might also be indulging in similar activities..though nothing can be said about it with certainty
