  • old diaspora : labourers, semi skilled or un skilled population, settlement in british colonies(mostly) - so more in developing and island nations...

new diaspora : professionals, skilled population, mstly in developed countries...

    role in nation building,,..
    1) remittances
    2) use the programmes of Mo external affairs...in nations development..?(could not remember eve one? :(( :(( @-)
    3) returning to india and begin startups, innovate in indian establishments(like sharukh in swades)
    4) attain leadership position in their respective nations...like many ppl in us, presidents in carribean and pacific islands, etc..
  • Since the dawn of civilizations in the indian subcontinent people have migrated from india to other countries or civilizations due to reasons like trade, religion etc. But since athe advent of Europeans in india the diaspora majority constituted of:
    1) plantation workers in sri lanka, myanmar and other south east nations
    2) labourers and unskilled workers migrated in search of bare livelihood
After independence and till 1980s the diaspora observed following changes:
    1) previously settled changed professions and turned into lil businessman, though some were still entangled in the same profession.
    2) also a new wave of migrants that too unskilled mainly migrated towards middle east asia.
But after the the 1980s and till now the diaspora has observed a day and night change. It constitutes mainly of :
    1) highly skilled workers majorly IT PROFESSIONALS.
    2) entrepreneurs
    3) and still a large part of the diaspora is in the middle east asia working in different skilled and unskilled workers.

The role that the present diaspora can play in nation building can't be better explained by what a NRI lawyer did on his return to India in 1915 on whose memory PBD is celebrated on 9 jan every yea. Though major thrust by the diaspora could be:
    1) the entrepreneur and businessman can help gov realize its goal of make in india a success and investments and tech support in various other schemes viz. Smart cities, skill india etc to name a few.
    2) the whole diaspora could act as lobby in realizing india its rightful place in international organizations.
    3) the multitude of perspectives can enhance our principle of unity within diversity.
Besides these the huge remittances we receive do help us in balancing our BOP.
  • Plz guys give reviews

Brilliant answer and excellent coverage of ideas. To augment this we can add following points.

    1. Thrust on Tourism. Prime Minister Modi on his visit to Australia has said if each NRI family can at least find one family whom they can influence to visit India, it will be an exponential thrust to Indian Tourism Industry.
    2. The New Diaspora being more educated and aware about the policies of Goverment can act as a brand ambassador for New India.
3 The new diaspora can work with the Goverment of India upon digital india program, they can provide insights upon the kind of service delivery mechanism they experience in more developed countries.
    4. New diaspora can bring in and spread awareness about their idea of Social Security Schemes under operation at other countries so that we can learn the best practices from them.
  • Thanx buddy ......tourism...brand ambassadors......great points to add....

Awesome answer, one may add some points like.
    1. New diaspora as reverse brain drain and facilitator in educational field especially as professors, exchange program.
    2. Political participation and hence making india more inclusive in political representation via various routes like social media, funding, voting.
