guys i am in for it ! i have studied this part in detail and have made notes too ..but i do not have any scanner .. so i'll post the topic and few important points too .. hope it will help ..what ever will be left or missing please do mention so that i will add up in my notes too ..
here goes the first one ..
JP MOVEMENT
Background
1. students protests in gujrat and bihar 2. Gujrat:- a) agitation by students against rising prices of food grains, cooking oil and other commodities and against corruption at high places b) aka Nav Nirman, the movemet for regeneration and demanded dismissal of state govt. c) joined by opposition parties 3. Bihar:- a) events in gujarat inspired studenta in bihar to launch struggle againat misgovernance and corruption b) bihar had witnessed a great deal of instability c) unequally held land and price rise another reason d) after a ceratin time students urged JP to lead
4. JP agreed on two conditions i) non violence ii) movement should not restricted to bihar then came the movement to be known as JP movement
JP Movement
1. movement assumed a political character ans had national appearance
2. JP gave the call for total revolution(will discuss it in another post later) and dismissal of congress govt. in bihar
3. strikes and hartals, however govt. refused to resign
Railway Strikes
1. alongside JP movement railway gave a call for nation wide strike
2. reasons:- demands related to bonus and service condition
3. govt. replied harshly with many arrest and strike had to be called off after 20 days
Criticism
a more detailed critique of jp movement was offered by R K Patil a former ICS officer :-
1. crowds were less disciplined e.g. attacks on the state assembly and the forcible prevention of bihar governor for delivering his annual address
2. modes did not confirm strictly to gandhian standards
3. bihar agitation was both unconatitutional and undemocratic by demanding the dismissal of duly elected assembly.
4. though the govt. drawbacks can not be over looked but no need to substitute the law of "govt. by discussion" by the law of "govt. by public street opinion"
jp was in news few months back, so started with the JP movement !
I am not going to read anything on this topic.last I read bipan chandra spend a week on it but not even a single question was asked.so since my optional is psir I am aware of most of the issues that India has faced after its independence.also I have been able to answer my test series questions related quite comfortably.
lets bring out some topics for this part: NAM, Land reform movement Language movement/reorganisaton of states integration of french and portugues colonies, merger of princely kingdoms with Indian Union Emergency period Mandal commission Bhopal gas tragedy chipko movement role of Indian women since independence

I'd say none of the book is sufficient in itself. I'd opt for Bipin Chandra(hardly 5-6 chapters to be done from here) + Internet research for important/missing topics. Watch Pradhanmantri series as well if you are interested.
My view is: let's don't overdo it. Bipin Chandra has its biased approach. but it covers the most issues from exam point of view. Guha is a nice book. but at this point of time, to read it and prepare notes --> ROI is less.
So as other members have suggested, we can make notes from Bipin Chandra + Internet + Coursera PDF. Or, we can post here questions in a systemic manner and write the answers. That way, it will cover most of the syllabus.
