  • Shadow zones are generally the zones which are diameterically antipodal to the epicentre. Here eq is not experienced because:
    - P-waves while passing through the inner (solid) core get deflected from their path and fail to reach these spots.
    - S- waves as you know can travel only through solids. Thus, the get absorbed in the liquid (outer)core and do not reach these spots.
    - L- waves are weakend too much before they reach these spots.
But P waves can be felt at the anticentre, @andy133 . Would you want to check on this?

My understanding of shadow zones goes exactly according to the figure you have put up. In the figure we can see the P wave getting deflected and not reaching the areas antipodal to the epicentre, isn't it?
What do you mean when you say "they can be felt at anticentre" ?

  • Some friends have complained above that the thread has gone in wrong direction by posting questions here. Since, most of the questions were posted by me, so please accept my apologies for taking it in wrong direction. But you see, this is an indirect result of exam anxiety. Earlier I used to post questions only in relevant threads and you can check that. But those were not opened by many people and the replies were late. Sometimes I had to post my question again to get replies. Since, this thread is active and I was doing my revision, so I started posting in this thread to get quick replies. That was the sole reason, nothing else.

Thanks and good luck to all :-)
@Armstrong no problem dude. You asked most of the questions on geography which is my weak link. So we all also got some enlightenment. All the best to you too.

  • @andy133

Antipode of an epicentre is the anticentre. And in the figure, you can see that P waves do reach the anticentre and hence the anticentre does NOT lie in the shadow zone.
