@Rajurathor -1. What is the basic difference between Mao and Marx ? 2.Do you think Marx had, if any, strategy? Finally 3.Who do you think was more successful Marx or Mao?
Marx was man of Idea, a Philosopher, Economist, Sociologists rolled in one while Mao was man of action, a Politician, a leader.
Marx took inspiration from Hegel's idea of dialectics and applied it to "matter" instead of "idea"( Hegel focused on idea ). He proposed his theory about class relations and social conflicts based on this material dialectism and puts material need of human life at the center of everything related to human thoughts and actions. Economic organization of society is basically dependent on "mode of production" and social stratification depends on who controls "force of production". Economic activity is base of society everything else like polity, society, culture, religion is just a manifestation of it in various forms known as superstructure. On the basis of who owns the means of production he classify society into two major classes Proletariat and Bourgeoisie which are eternally at conflict.
The first political application of this Idea was done by Lenin 1917 through Russian revolution and making first socialist state USSR. Lenin made some modifications in Marxism thus new ideology was termed as Marxism-Leninism. Marx did not speak anything about transition between Capitalist state and Communist state, it was Lenin who made it clear that a Socialist state will come before Communist state where dictatorship of Proletariat will be the defining feature. Stalin and Mao perhaps took their cues from here only and established one of cruelest of regimes ever existed.
In China Mao attempted and succeeded in establishing a socialist state with further more modification in Marxism-Leninism. Proletariat of Mao were mainly peasantry class while that of Marx come from Industrial labor class, as he considered peasantry backward and revolution could be brought in Industrially advanced countries only.
The kind of violence Mao and Stalin committed to establish Socialist state probably would not have been given assent by Marx, many historians believe.
Yes, Marx had strategy, though not a perfect one but he is a Philosopher not an leader so we can not discredit him on the front that his strategy was not flawless. He should be criticized at the level of Idea not strategy and action. Same is the reason Marx and Mao should not be compared. One is man of idea and another is man of action, farmer doesn't understand the the practical difficulties of implementation in given context and later doesn't see beyond his time and get engrossed in present so much that looses the big picture contrary to a philosopher.
Valid criticism of Marxism is - Matter is important but not the only thing, idea/spirit too manifests in whole array of human thoughts and action - It's assumption that individual personality is malleable and devoid of rationality thus is conditioned perfectly by institutions is flawed. Democracy believes individual is perfectly capable of rational thinking. - It's adamant application of two monolithic classes entirely separate from each other, inherently at loggerheads is not true. - Class struggle is just one part of social relationship not whole. People interact at many levels. - So called superstructures is not entirely dependent of economic functions of society.
