just a thought..... till now everyone of us have mentioned that serving the poor is one of the prime motivation of becoming an IAS but god forbid if we don't end up as an IAS how many of us will actually ever bother about being part of any NGO and serving the poor... i have a feeling that most of us (including me) will take up a private/govt job and live a happy family life being oblivious to the difficulties faced by the weaker section of our country
Sir, this is where the catch lies. We want to serve people provided we enjoy social prestige and power (Conditional). There is nothing wrong in power but for me ultimate aim of power is to empower the most underprivileged ones. NGOs have been instrumental in brining change in lives of downtrodden people, aiding govt agencies in policy formulation and implementation. But without power, their actions don't carry responsibility, herein comes the role of civil service. Corrections and suggestions are welcome.

I actually hate this line "serving the poor". (This means this service shound be disbanded after reducing percentage of poor to zero?) . This smacks of socialist mentality and patronizing attitude. What best a person, while being an IAS or working as a private individual, can do is to create opportunities, ensures their equal spread, and fight for the justice. This approach will encompass everyone and everything. The only benefit of being an IAS is that, you can achieve the same in a speedy manner by utilizing government institutions, which private person find difficulty in accessing.
True sir. IAS should not be about being Burra Sahibs on whose whims and fancies should lie fate of many people. Rather it should be about being an agent of change, changing the mindset of people, empowering instead of patronizing them, creating opportunities for them them earn food rather than dole it out, make them understand policies and take them on board in executing govt schemes (in simple possible ways such as assigning them vigilant role in schools/PHCs etc.).
@Macho_Man .. kuch samay pehle aap ne Gorkha Regiment ka signature line bataya tha.. It was very inspiring.. Can you repeat it? Not able to find it anywhere else.

As a citizen of india and a social man, I experience some problems which i and others face and which needs to be addressed. eg i am frequent traveller..in last few years..i increasingly come across migrant laborers expressing displeasure about their life. ..i seems that these have collectively added to our sense of unhappiness about life....IAS will a potent platform for me to address everyday life problem of many people and will enable me to contribute to our happiness..the reason we live as a nation
