  • edited December 2016
Social thought is as old as society itself yet the origin of sociology is traded back to 19th century. Modern society has characteristics of industrialization , capitalism, democratic form of government and sociology tends to study the behavior of human, inter-relation between them in the modern society.
The root of ideas in sociology lies in the social condition prevailing in Europe. The ideas of Enlightenment , Industrial revolution and french revolution marks the birth of sociology and quest of sociologist to develop generalized pattern from these society.
The age of enlightenment came with the idea of rational thinking which generated the quest among the people to critically examine the knowledge maintaining value neutrality. These ideas can be reflected in our present day modern society which is the methodology of sociologist to study about society.
The ideas like liberty , equality and fraternity which came form french revolution shaped the modern society and its democratic institutions. Sociology also tends to study about the present day modernity about the government , state and its relation with citizens
The industrial revolution marked the birth of division of labor , mass mobilization , systematic application of scientific knowledge for invention of new machines and controlling natural resources for benefit of mankind. The problems arising out of these social changes is the subject matter sociology and sociology tries to give rational explanation to them.
However, study of primitive society is also seen in the research of sociologist like Emile Durkhiem who use totemism of Auronta tribes of Australia to give sociological explanation for functions of religion in society.
But overall we can say that sociologist are more concern with the study of society prevailing in the modern times and problems. Hence, sociology is study of modern society.
  • The origin of sociology is believed to be a reaction of origin of modernity in Europe thus modernity and sociology are twin born.Modernity has always been the focus of study of sociology .In recent times a significant shift has been observed in sociology's approach to modernity ,from celebration of modernity in industrial revolution era to contemprory post modetn theroies, however, study of modern times has been essential core of the subject since its inception.

St. Simons writings ,which analyse the reorganisation of society during industrial reolution, show strong faith in advemt of modernity and its impact on society.Early sociologists such as Comte and Durkhiem have continued this tradition and discussed Hopes and challanges of modern societies.Durkhiem has discussed many aspects of modern societies such as division of labour, anomie, religion, suicide,in detail.

Sociology has not only studied modern world but works of the likes of Marx have influenced modern world in great deal too, during 20th century. The Bolshevik revolution,World wars and their impact on society has been a subject of interest in sociological domain.

In contemporary times sociology has attained a greater stature and has found a stonger place in day to day life of modetn world.Theories of the likes of feminist theory, post modern theory and critical theory has helped proceeding toward a deeper understanding of modern world as well as more profound contribution to shaping of modern world.

Thus since its beginning to the age of consolidation and maturity,'modern societies' as a subject has been on center stage in the domain of sociology and getting one step further sociology is now producing powerful theories in influecing modern world.
  • Can any one explain the term Ethnomethodoglogy.
  • Can any one explain the term Ethnomethodoglogy.
As far as my understanding goes , Ethnomethodology is a methodology used in sociological research which focuses on using 'people's methods' that is takig into consideration the language they use and symbols and meanings attached to it.
For example take the term 'ram-ram' generally used as a greeting in norhern india , now w/o taking local's meaning into consideration researcher must find it bizzare why someone will call God twice on seeing someone  but for the local it is just a greeting ,that is used to greet someone in an informal day to day maner.Understanding such nuances about 'subject's' culture can give researcher a Better understanding of researched society.

I hope I was clear any further doubt/,discussion most welcome ..

How it is different from symbolic interaction-ism because there also we use symbol, language to relate to the meaning of human reaction in response to any external stimuli.
