    Q. I just graduated from college. Should I take job, or pickup Post-Graduation course or directly start preparing for UPSC?

Ans. Depends on your financial situation and family support.

    Job part:

If Civil Service is your ultimate goal, you just want a job for pocketmoney and preparation, then look for a job that has minimum workload and travel time = then you can allot max energy for preparation.
For example Computer Lab assistant, receptionist, temporary lecturer etc.
Ofcourse there are no big salaries or quick promotions in such jobs but then you can’t eat “Laddu” with both the hands.

    PG part:

Pros: atleast your backup is secured i.e. if you fail in IAS, you can go back private company at a decent job (compared to having single bachelor degree)

    Cons:

Doing PG from some half**** bogus college hardly has any market value. You’re way better off in bank clerk’s job than the amount of salary one gets through such overhyped PG courses. (more explained in backup plan, in Act V)
To get admission in reputed college, one has to give some sort of entrance exam.
In reputed college, You may not be left with sufficient time left for UPSC preparation due to assignments and semester exams. But still there is more time and energy than available to working professionals in some fields.

In the end depends on your taste for career backup. Consider all factors and then decide.

    @TinTin @ambitieux

I want to pursue MA in Eng. Literature.
Thank you guys for your elaborated reply.

Any idea what is the entrance exam pattern? Is merit list based only on entrance exam's performance or grad marks too?
    What about the accomodation ?
    TIA.
Entrance pattern for MA. (Eng ) I do not have any idea .But merit list in DU will be based on entrance marks, but graduation percentage plays a crucial role during admission.

Actually in DU ,they divide all the students into two categories-A and B. Category A students get direct admission ,some conditions are applied there like more than 60% in Eng Hons from any DU college etc. But ,category B students have to go through whole entrance process.

And in JNU ,all India entrance exam is held for PG courses.

    @sheen
I do not think ,Doing MA will be dangerous. There are many pros and cons but at the end of the day ,the captain of the ship will decide that in which direction he wants to go.

->Anyways RYC masters degree does help sometimes. I can't remember instances now but it really does?
Do not you remember ,currently Dept of Youth Affairs gave special recruitment to civil service aspirants -those who failed in Interview stage of UPSC 2011 or 2012.But one of the eligibility criteria was PG degree.

  • @ambitieux
Bhai. I just had a glance at the syllabus of JNU entrance exam for MA English.
It does demand core knowledge. Capacity to have originality in thinking is must-they say.
    Hmmm.
    Regards,
    Sheen.

  • @Sheen-

    Yes ,it does necessitate.
But if you have studied your subject well in your graduation, then it would not be a big deal.Don't worry.

  • @sheen
Finally enrolled myself in MA Socio at Bhartiya Vidyapeeth Univ(correspondence).

Awesome course - no compulsions for going to their contact sessions on Sundays.
Very low fees - 10000 for both years.
    Rolling admissions till September end.
    Excellent study material(comparable to IGNOU)
    NAAC A grade university

They have only 3 courses for MA - Socio, Economics, Eng Litt
Only people living in Delhi are eligible for the courses.
  • @sheen Yes @TinTin explained in my Discussion about JNU Sociology. I had qualified that last year. But didn't join due to some reasons. This year JNU results have been declared after the entrance and i had appeared again but didn't get through this time. The questions on Sociology are basic to courseware based to test to test originality in thinking. I wanted a friend circle and a frame-Yes for that. Now it too should be a point to ponder - What is your optional? [But not really of great concern?]. Please look at the discussion http://forumias.com/discussion/1571/sociology-jnu-ma#Item_6
Some fine points. Yes doing a PG will save you from frustration but it too will test your time management skills. And DU entrance will be on this winter.
