It's just interpretation
I have seen many category people from uttarakhand who use sharma as surname. Surname can't define your category. You can use any surname.
Similarly SINGH surname is used for every category people.
In UP itself, GUPTAs in western side are considered as general and GUPTAs in eastern side are considered as obc.

how would you know that they are from western up or eastern up or from which state? best way to know is by filing an RTI. we have seen before some ias and ips officer convicted after 20 years of services for fake certificates.

^^yes thats why I asked as I know many with "Gupta" Surname as both OBC's as well as General same goes for other Surnames..

ye Jain wala gadbad h it shouldnt be under OBC but Gupta ka I m sure because East UP, Bihar me kafi h OBC with Gupta surname.khair dalo RTI acha h pol khule in logon ki..

Dalits and many backward castes were kept out of the domain of 'caste hindus'. Traditional dalit surnames often invite discrimination and stigma in caste ridden Indian society. So, many dalits and obc choose neutral surnames /upper caste surnames. Mostly it has nothing to do with fake certificates.
