How many of you think that reading /watching too much news is depressing?

edited October 2015 in Current Affairs
And what do you guys think about the following article?
http://www.theguardian.com/media/2013/apr/12/news-is-bad-rolf-dobelli

I personally think it is depressing and affects concentration. I am preparing for civil services from the last two years sitting at home(could not clear even prelims both the times) but reading /thinking a lot about random news items

  • i left studying newspapers..its quite distracting, and become obsession too..instead follwing summary of news...given the current trend of questions, reading too many newspapers won't have much benefit/time.
  • Research has proven Facebook and cause Depression, literally. (Depression is a mental illness)
  • Obvious reasons for this:

    1. Absurdity being promoted as science.

    2. Recreation and entertainment being covered as aggressively as impending tsunamis. Page 3 has its own reportage but scarcely anyone has time for ground realities unless something blame-game-worthy pops up.

    3. Pushy, hotheaded anchors spewing political propaganda and calling it news. Branding their own opinions as our views.

    4. Advertorials masquerading as 'must reads.'

    5. The "tell me why my butt itches" columns. The "tell me why the sun rises in the north" column. The "tell me why my girlfriend wants to dump my sad ass" column.

    6. Repeat, repeat and repeat. Copy-paste journalism. Same piece on 20 news websites all claiming exclusivity.

    7. Endless, pointless, shameless, meaningless, tactless advertising. Advertising next to stories of death and destruction. "Buy my lucky sando ganjee" next to suffering / dying children.

    8. Biased, uneducated or outright silly coverage of issues. You realise how stupid these people are once they cover something up your alley. The result is between funny, cringe-inducing and rage-inducing.

    9. The sanctimony that comes with the brand labels. The holier-than-thou attitude. The air of superiority with a know-it-all attitude.

    10. Ownership by vested interest groups that they keep hushing up, even though it's an open secret. This includes political and business interests.

    11. Shoot and scoot journalism. Call a man a murderer, a liar and a thief over weeks and then suddenly drop the story on realising that the guy was innocent. Then tendering and half-hearted apology over two days.

    12. Oh! The bloody hypocrisy.
  • The way of reporting and publishing crime and biased approach creates negative thinking in our mind ....
  • apply sort of 'Suno sabki karo manki ' tactics. Develop thick skin for your own good . Everyday news becoming gloomier and gloomier or if not, at least that is how they are being spun. Journalism is becoming more like the one depicted in Nightcrawler. Little sensitivity, more sensationalism, full of condescending megalomaniacs . a bunch of pastors and godmen passing off as rationalists ; a page 3 journalist , a Bollywood artist, becomes an expert in law and order , economy, foreign affairs and what not , and that too in matter of 90 minutes .

Bahut sahi likha hai Dada ...Very apt depiction of the condition of Newspapers in the present scenario @Etat
Bilkul aisa hi hota hai aajkal ke akhbaaro mein .

Baaki mera manna hai ki akhbaaro mein bahut zyada doobna nahi chahiye .......Jo bhi syllabus ke according relevant News Article mile ( jo 2-3 newspapers UPSC CSE ke liye sabhi log padhte hain ) usko hi SIRF padhna chahiye , and baaki News Articles ko outrightly ignore kar dena chahiye ......

Isse ek to time bhi save hoga aur dusra bina vajah ka Mind bekar ki News mein divert hone se bhi bach jaaega....Aur jo time save hoga usko kahin kisi dusri jagah par Productively and Constructively use kiya jaa sakta hai .

    Hi,
You echoed my exact sentiments. Reading newspapers can sometimes be distracting for me. Just today I read a news that some minister is justifying the murder, which was done on suspicion of beef eating. What hypocrisy! It's really difficult to read news without getting emotionally attached to it, these days :-<
  • Reading newspaper is the only exciting thing about the UPSC exam prep for me, even though I haven't been able to do justice to it.
  • especially the hindu incites sentiments of hindus and i think is spreading hatred and communalism in garb of communist journalism...this newspaper will take a week or two to let dadri incident die down..
