Is it too late to start preparation for 2013???

edited January 2013 in CSAT
hi,
i have done MSc Life Science (JNU). i wanted to ask is it too late to start preparing for 2013 upsc? i have been reading newspapers regularly through out my life. i am planning to take Public Admin and Geography as my optional. how much on an average these subjects take, how much writing practice is required to tackle mains exam for the above mentioned subjects and also for GS given one devotes 8-9 hours daily. Kindly advice.

no one can tell you how much time you need for this exam.. last year one of my freind cleared and got IRTS after starting from January... he never studied newspaper and was not aware of even basics like consitution, parliament etc... so it all depends on you.. how much u can push urself in the given time... he also had PA and Geo ... same as mine...

I will suggest u to prepare for prelims first and then think about mains.. as not much time has left now.. yes.. while u prepare for prelims .. get ur basics strong in geography (read NCERTs and GCL n number of times)... and polity.. it will help u in mains...

writing practice is again subjective... I know people who have cleared without practicing a single page...
  • Hey aditi.

thanks a lot for your reply friends. this will be my first attempt and i have no idea how to start preparations specially what to study for public admin :((

can anyone briefly guide me about the pub ad as an optional and how to start for the sub. i intend to finish paper2 of pub ad by march end then start other paper1 and geo after CSAT.
    is it a right approach?
  • @aditi

detailed list of books to be followed can be found at this link..

  • thanks a lot. but i have no idea about pub ad. what is the most basic book which i can start with which will give me some idea about the subject?

In the beginning Fadia and Fadia is good book. It comes in two volume for paper 1 and paper 2. You can take whichever you want.

However, there are many other books too like Sadana and Sharma etc. But I have studied Fadia and found it helpful.

you can also start with some coaching's class (hand written) notes. As they are generally short and precise.

  • its never too early and never too late.
every time is the right time.
just start the preparation from now.
    best of luck.

if u were not in touch with the news then go too MN nd get Vajirams current affair notes for the last 12 months (though some people say only may to may news are asked but u will make a base by reading the entire last years affairs)

solve last 5 year's pre gs papers. then u will have the idea about how questions are asked.
take a deep look on conventional subjects.

about csat i can only advice for RS Agrawal for maths.
for rest i cant say anything as i also dnt knw how to prepare them

PS: i havent read the discussions an this is how i prepared for 1012, others can have different opinions.

    this may also help
thank you very much sir. i have been reading the news since my grad years o i will say i have brief idea about the world, but is it according to upsc prep.. i highly doubt that.
thank you for suggesting the vajiram website. i just brought chronicle mains 2012 book. should i refer to that also? what would be your advice SIR?

  • Hi, I have a similar dilemma. I have started preparing since last week and I'm only looking for prelims right now. Not planning to join any coaching institute too, since one institute in Bangalore which was supposed to come up with a "crash-course" for general studies did not get enough candidates and hence it cancelled the batch. I am on my notice period now and have started studying ncert text books. Having prepared for CAT before, I think aptitude wouldn't be an issue, but GS part is a killer. I also want to give IR at JNU a shot. The question is, if somebody is starting from scratch now, does she/he stand a chance to succeed in this highly competitve exam?
