Economic optional coaching and time required for preparation 2017

Hi All,
I am from engineering background wanted to take Economics optional in CSE 2017.
How much require for preparation for the economics optional ? Is there any good coaching available ?
One doubt- I was going through topper with economics optional and found most of them are from economics background, does it means economics option out of reach for non-eco background student?

Comments

  • I am a economics graduate and still economics felt out of reach for me :joy:
Don't get disappointed though, it's just a personal experience. You might do great.
  • I'm in a similar dilemma. Planning to shift from Geography optional (have already studied 50-60%).

Economics is tough (no doubt) especially for non-engineers but I reckon it's one of the safer technical subjects apart from Maths atm.

Maths is one of the safer technical subjects :D
  • I wrote my 3rd mains with eco. I have background in eco and considered it an optional with relatively safe floor marks of ~220.
But that was until 2014. Last 2 years a lot has changed and 2016 mains paper was a disastrous one. I feel that this is just the start of a new trend which is likely to continue.
Even otherwise it is a tough optional (Paper 1) to grasp and remember. The scaling seems to be helping only top 10-15% candidates (even then only 2 candidates in final list in CSE2015 had 250+ marks and hardly 5 with > 225). And now I realize that this paper has enough number of MA Econ candidates to make up for that 10-15% number.

There is lack of guidance and each one of the 3-4 coaching in ORN is outright fraud and incompetent.

Is it a wise to shift to economics in that sense?
  • At this point of time,i cant tell how useful economics optional has been for aspirants this time. Paper 1 was damn tough. After preparing extensively and solving last 20 year papers,i found almost 50 marks ques coming out of nowhere. Even relatively untouched areas were explored and people were forced to think before writing an answer.
So economics is definitely not the same it used to be 2-3 years ago. So my sincere advice would be to go through papers yourself, take advice from genuine teachers and then plan.
Whether this optional worked for me or many like me,will only be known after 2016 mains marks come.
  • Going through past papers to arrive at optional choice doesn't work. You would find questions easy, it's the answers that are tough and then add marking scheme, scaling etc.
