^^ 306 has many legitimate uses like in ragging related suicides. Don't think it would be scrapped. If euthanasia itself remains illegal, 306 remains in force for doctors engaging in euthanasia. Frankly, I don't think that it should be scrapped. Exceptions can be added.

hmmmm i thought same..............for euthanasia purposes they would need to make exception to sec 306......

Yes. But first they have to decide on the euthanasia.
@ck10203 vaise even if sec 309 is removed, sec 306 stays...........matlab physican assisted suicide still punishable under sec 306 right???
Yes, sec 306 will remain. Attempt to suicide may not be punished, but Abetment to Attempt to suicide will still be punishable. As you rightly pointed out, in future, ad hoc exceptions may be added. But as a concept, there has been no opposition to Sec 306.

vaise i am against it ..............india is not prepared for it now................heavy misuse possible..........even court has given same reasoning in its judgements..........court has said morality at all time low in indian society...........and i agree.......@arindamsarkar
^^ Personally I've seen such examples of moral degradation. But we have to find a way. Time-frame can be extended. We don't have to do it all immediately.

dude it should be abetment to suicide.........abetment is defined in terms of offence.........i think what u wrote will come under sec 116.@ck10203
@ArindamSarkar Sir, you wrote: "Decriminalisation of suicide via abrogation of 309 IPC removes the statutory hurdle in this euthanasia issue as well."
This is not correct. The proposal is simply this: Attempt to suicide is really a call for help and not a call for punishment. And help should be provided.
This by itself doesn't make suicide or attempt to suicide acceptable. Least so for Euthanasia. In the case of nonvoluntary euthanasia (active as well as passive), it will still be termed as culpable homicide.
Yeah, of course. Loose wording on my part. I meant the kind allowed in India - voluntary passive. But didn't 309 even apply to that like it did for hunger strikes?
Hunger Strike is different from Euthanasia. The two terms are exclusive. NO KIND OF EUTHANASIA IS ALLOWED IN INDIA PRESENTLY.
If Mental Healthcare Bill gets enacted, Iron Sharmilla will be put in Hospital instead of Jail. Nothing more than that. (Also, one important thing to note is that a hunger striker can be arrested only when it goes on to the extent of taking his/her life.)
