Queries on maths optional

I have few queries on maths as an optional. I hope people here can resolve these. Apologies if you feel some questions are naive.

1. After so much practice and coaching, why are people not able to attempt 250/250. I believe the questions (at least the model of questions) are taken from different standard books from where we practice. Is it because of time constraints in the exam?
2. As the maths is objective ( unlike humanities ) with fixed answers, how can one gain relative advantage over others in terms of marks if almost all the people attempt for same marks.
3. Why so many engineers who have very good maths background are not going for maths?

  • I can answer
    1. People have been able to attempt 250 (many, including me, did it in paper 2 :D). Time is not as important as it is in GS papers. Questions used to be taken from standard books but not quite so recently. In any case, there are only so many books that you can solve.
    2. It isn't completely objective. The way you present your answer matters a lot. You can't skip a reason when presenting a result. There has to be continuity between steps. I think many miss this part.
    3. After 2014 mains, many have chosen to abandon humanities and other subjects for maths. Why this is so, I don't know. Earlier, the presence of two optionals and the large amount of time that one needs to put in for Maths deterred people from choosing it.
