Coaching For UPSC-2014

edited February 2013 in Miscellaneous
I am in a bit of dilemma regarding coaching in Delhi. I have decided to go for coaching for 2014 exam. I don’t know which institute to go.
My preferred choices are
1)Sriram IAS
2)Vajiram and Ravi
3)Chanakya
4)Rao IAS.
5) Alternate learning system
Out of all these I have an inclination towards Sriram as it specializes only in GS,and if pattern changes it would be beneficial. Also it's economically viable and the course it winded up in 4 months or so (4 hours a day and 7 days a week). But I want to have a specialized suggestion from you. Vajiram,Rao,ALS are renowned. I cant decide on quality, don’t want to judge based on advertisements. Please if someone has some experience regarding this, give your suggestion. I would really appreciate that.

I did Vajiram coaching. I can give you few pointers on it.
If you consider the direction in which GS pattern has been moved in last couple of years, Vajiram is not upto the mark. The questions asked are mainly dynamic (more related to your opinion on what is going around us). Vajiram teaches you the static part mainly (basics of geography, economy, polity, history)+some unnecessary stuff (whole human biology etc. ) + needless hand wrenchin note-writing(whereas concise notes are easily available outside) while teaching. This was the scene in 2011. They could not have changed so fast. But having said that, they teach you the static part good/awesome especially ravindran(polity), minocha(geography) and one kapuria(economy).
regarding others, i haven't taken their coaching so won't comment deeply. But some say Sriram is more oriented towards present needs and teach static part well too.

well to be frank coaching classes will not help you much in the present scenario, it is more like a psychological satisfaction, that you can realise only after completing your coaching process. AK_CS very rightly pointed out the style of teaching by coaching classes and the kind of questions asked by UPSC but i guess you are novice to this field so i suggest you to go for that class whose fee is minimal and provide good guidance. and i think Sriram is a better option to choose from your list.
  • Thank you both of you for your valuable inputs. I really appreciate that.
So its not Vajiram and ravi for sure.
    Will go for Sriram.
  • I am also preparing for 2014 upsc...I was convinced of joining Vajiram for GS but is Sriram better option? Many people on this site have suggested Vajiram.....
  • @Devika
Vajiram is gud fr beginners....sriram is gud fr old players...
I advise you to do self study for gs...n den see if u really require coaching or not.....plus u cn utilise test series of vajiram/sriram
    gud luck

I was also thinking to join vajiram and ravi,i heard about it a lot from many people. But i then searched about it and i came to know its not keeping pace with the current scenario as someone pointed out in this thread also. I prefer Sriram now as it winds up course in about 4 months, and and it specializes only in GS and with an impending pattern change,it might be useful. Also fees is decent enough. Will get a lot of time for self study after coaching. I am a fresher and i hope to study as much as i can in these 3-4 months before coaching in June to be in tune with classroom.
  • @anirudh Well. After a lot of deliberation, I joined Srirams' IAS. And I am pretty satisfied with it. Considering the changing scenario of the exam, they surely cover the static portion well, and give a good outlook w.r.t to dynamic part as well. They provide a decent push, rest is all upon us.
Sriram sir is pretty good at both Eco and Polity. Though at times, he has some pretty radical opinions. Lol. But he gives his disclaimer alongside. The history sir has been around and gives a good direction to your preparation. All in all, One of the best you can get!
  • A statement by the history teacher which reflects his coherence with the changing demands of UPSC, 'We say Mera Bharat mahan.. Study history not for the sake of it, but to know, Mera Bharat kyun mahan! History. Polity. Economics. Geography-> Good. Science is good as well. However, Biology and Environment are really not up to the mark. This is purely my personal opinion. :)
  • @fallen_leaves
Thank you for your valuable input. It really cleared the remaining hesitation in my mind. :)
I want to ask you some of the other things,so please bear with me.... :^o
Does the course get over in about 4-5 months as claimed ? Are classes ( 4hours a day and 7days a week) ?
Also what are the accommodation charges at rajinder nagar (inclusive of food) ? How far is the PG from coaching center ? Do they conduct regular tests (both subjective and objective ) ?
Would be really helpful if you address these. ~X(
  • @anirudh Well. The classes I am attending are like 2 hrs / day. 7 days a week. Our classes started in the 1st week of October and final leg of syllabus should be over by 1 week of March. So I guess, YES, Its pretty much around 4-5 months. Tests are conducted once a particular subject is over. The tests so far have been objective type only.

W.r.t to accommodation, there are a lot of PGs in the area. I cant help much on that as I dont live there and rather drive down. Hope this helps!
