few months back, in australia, julia gillard became the prime minister by toppling her prime minister Kevin Rudd, who is now foreign minister (probably). a major reason for the fall was come controvery over Carbon tax that Kevin Rudd wanted to impose.
My question is What is carbon tax, and which all countries have imposed carbon tax? does india also have carbon tax in any form?
Carbon tax is a form of pollution tax. It is imposed on releases of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is emitted largely through the combustion of fossil fuels used in electricity production; industrial, commercial, and residential heating; and transportation.
The government sets a price per ton on carbon, then translates it into a tax on electricity, natural gas or oil. Because the tax makes using dirty fuels more expensive, it encourages utilities, businesses and individuals to reduce consumption and increase energy efficiency. Carbon tax also makes alternative energy more cost-competitive with cheaper, polluting fuels like coal, natural gas and oil.
Following countries have imposed carbon tax: 1. China 2. USA 3. Canada 4. India 5. South Korea 6. Japan 7. European Union (27 countries) 8. Costa Rica 9. Brazil 10. South Africa 11. New Zealand 12. Taiwan 13. Australia
On July 1, 2010 India introduced a nationwide carbon tax of 50 rupees per metric tonne ($1.07/t) of coal both produced and imported into India.
