answering geography questions

I have a naive doubt regarding answer writing in geography optional

Suppose i put in a diagram or two for a 30 mark question. Is it mandatory to write 300 words?

The reason I am asking this question is that I some how run out of time when I draw diagrams and write the answer. Is there something that I am missing?

Also in map questions, a sizeable no of places are asked which are not available in oxford or longman atlas. What else am I supposed to refer to?

You just leave them. No one is anyway able to attempt them. Thats not where the competition wins. It wins because you miss out on classical questions. As per the word limit, its not mandatory, but in a 30 marker you must write at least 220 words..+ a diagram.
