Difference between harijians,dalits and adivasis

edited April 2014 in History & Culture
What are the differences between harijans, dalits and adivasis? im interested in learning the historical origins of each group? and the cultural differences in the group like do they worship a particular god or anything unique about them?

Comments

  • Harijan- it was coined by Gandhiji after Ambedkar accused him of neglecting the welfare of SC's. Meaning is children of god.

Dalits are same as harijan. They are SC's. Ambedkar preferred to be called Dalit rather than harijan.

They worship Hindu gods since they come under the Indian Caste System, but after Ambedkar embraced Buddhism, some of them has followed his footsteps adopting BuddhiSm.

Both Dalits and Harijan are situated at the lowest rung of the Caste System as classified in Manusmriti.

Adivasis- They are mainly tribals i.e. ST's. They are outside the caste system. Though they do not have any particular religion, they have been assimilated into various religions like Hinduism, Christianity etc. Also they are the indigenous inhabitants of India like Dongria Kondhs.
