Candidates with MBA/PGDMs in Interview

Guys,

I found another thread Management as an optional for mains. But this is restricted to Interview. Please pour in possible questions and answers to MBAs in the upsc interview.

My thoughts:
1. How an MBA will help in civil servant's career?
2. Why CIvil services after MBA?
3. You are earning well. Why CIvil services?
4. It seems IIMs losing brand value. What do you think?
5. It seems IT/Automobile/any industry where u work is not doing well. What do you think
6. Oh! These MBAs were the reason for all this global financial crisis. Dont you agree?

Any other questions are welcome!

    Just mentioned 'Management'

But, ya be prepared on the basics:

Fin - NPV, IRR, Cashflows, balance sheet, P&L and some definitions like derivatives etc, if there are no Management Profs in the panel. If they are there, NO comments
Mark - 4Ps, sales vs marketing, branding, how will you sell yourself and also some product etc
    HR - MIght ask
Ops - I dont know. How can u improve efficiency, effectiveness etc possible
    General - Anything
  • I will be looking at this thread. It would be great to list out potential topics to study. Many a times, they will ask you 'definition/theory typ" questions which are very difficult for us esp those who relied on the 'case study' method :D (and esp if it is coming from areas like HR. OB etc)

Some questions from my last interview:
How will management education help an Administrator?
    Manager vs Administrator: Differences
    Why Civil service after MBA?
Peter Drucker: His Books & theories
Diff btw Case study and Case law?
    Doctor's dilemma?

At least in IIMs, the case study method is throughly grounded on theory. Students never seem to have heard of that ;)

What were you asked about Drucker?
  • ya i never meant that it is not grounded in theory. It just that our study and exam doesn't require us to mug thinkers and their theories. For instance, it ll b hard for me if i were aked to name five Mgmt gurus from HR/OB field

About Drucker, I hardly knew mch so the interviewer was disappointed :D
  • Guys who had their interviews please share what were you asked about management? Anything related to finance also. :)
    Thanks in advance.

Some questions from my last interview:
How will management education help an Administrator?
An administrator needs to take account of government resources, needs to understand the motivations of her subordinates, needs to communicate vision and mission of government services to the people. These are the subject matters of management. For ex to communicate a message against tobacco, we might need to segment the population and use different messages for different segments based on culture, practice etc.. Chewing tobacco is more prevalent in poor section of the society while cigarettes among the rich section.. This in marketing is known as segmentation, targeting and positioning..

    Manager vs Administrator: Differences
The goal and values of both are different. While a manager's main work is to accomplish the task for her organization ensuring efficiency and effectiveness, an administrator's main goal is to accomplish a task ensuring justice to all the parties especially the weaker section. Hence the values of empathy, compassion become important.. Also, an administrator holds position of power hence honesty, integrity are as important as efficiency and effectiveness..

    Why Civil service after MBA?
I have come to believe that for being motivated enough in my work for the next 30 years, I must be comfortable with the questions like what is my contribution towards a larger goal and what I want to achieve in life. Civil services provides a large scope for public service, and immense responsibility at a young age. Also it has great respect in the society. So I personally hold civil service as a challenge worth trying for.

Peter Drucker: His Books & theories
Sir, I have not given much focus on theories as our curriculum was based on case study method that is application based study. Though I have heard that Peter Drucker has written many books on marketing. I remember his one statement that "marketing makes sales superfluous". This came in the context of a case study.

Diff btw Case study and Case law?
I can tell about case study method but have no knowledge about case law.

    Doctor's dilemma?
are ye kya majak hai.. ye to ethics me hota tha - the act of double effect.. MBA me kaha se aya...
  • fortune at the bottom of pyramid, disruptive innovation, surrogate advertising, organisation culture were some of the questions i have faced in interviews in past.
