You could read men who ruled india. http://www.flipkart.com/men-ruled-india/p/itmdyufykjae2gst
I also wanted to get a perspective different from nationalist (propagandist) perspective given by bipin chandra. But i'm unable to find time. If and when you ever read it, pls do let me know how it is :-)
  • There are certain approaches to study of colonialism and nationalism in India.

    Imperialist, Marxist, Nationalist and Sub-altern.

Imperialist approach comes near to your requirement. Cambridge School of
    historiography adopted this approach.

    About imperialist approach.

You can also refer to Anil Seal,
    ‘Imperialism and
    Nationalism in India’,
    in John Gallagher,
    Gordon Johnson, Anil
    Seal (eds.) ‘Locality,
    Province & Nation:
    Essays on Indian
    Politics 1870-1940 ’,
    Cambridge: 1973,
    pages 1-28.
