That is not correct.Everyone immediately likes to make it sound as if it is some commercial interest is behind all this.
The truth is that we had poor moderation. It was no more good enough to have a healthy conversation. Moderation can only be to a certain limit. There is culture that is built on any community. We had a good culture, which reduced the scope and need for moderation.
I wanted to hire people from the forum itself, and yet top members thought we did not have financial model in place, which is why many of them decided to work elsewhere, be it Fuhrere or Andy or Jaime or even the top female members and mods.Even right now I am scouting for Top Contributors to work closely pro bono or quid pro quo - anything that is suitable for them, but most people do not think there is a future. Future is created and built. It wont come on a platter.
So do not make it what it is not. It is the easiest thing to do. Without going into the logical grounds over why things are the way they are. I, or no founder, would not do anything to jeopardise things for commercial gains. I have never done things for money reasons. There are some people who will put passion before other things. Doing things they like.But since most people would not (a) have a passion (b) put passion before financial requirements ( which are genuine , and a reality of life ), they think everything works because of financial reasons. We have been lucky that way.
I returned to the forum after a long time. And surprised to see filthy abusive comments on many threads. Is there no moderation left?
People are abusive because of anonymity issues. Things on the Internet has been bad since the past half a decade. We did not build strong moderation tools. Also many of the people who contributed kind of gave up.
Then Telegram happened, and people ( overall, not just Civils aspirants ) moved to Groups and private conversations ( which have no archival value , and do not benefit people, if they visit it later because such conversations are not googlable and even destroyed , or float in the Internet Universe when all members walk out)
Then there is a huge explosion in number of people starting Yutube channels, Telegram Channel, people selling their courses and selling pirated courses in large numbers, leading to heavy spamming. The spam you see is only 1 / 20th of the spam generated.
There are structural reasons. However, we have no reasons to believe that this cannot be built into a community that works on collaboration and contriution.
Also, good conversations drive out bad conversations. Good Members drive out insensitive members. And Vice-Versa. But that requires a lot of "culture building" over what should be allowed and not allowed.
If anyone is still interested in this project, ping me and we can work on this. I am able to give it 2-3 hours / day about 3-5 days a week between 11PM - 1AM
