In geography, several questions have been asked which are not present in general books like savindra singh or Majid hussain ( like notogean realm , Seiches , IGBP) . Although these may be present in specialized texts on Oceanography , Geo morphology etc .
This thread is meant for the ones who have already covered the basic books and come across any term or concept that they feel is useful but absent in basic books .
Such terms or concepts can be shared here. Also if people agree , we can distribute among ourselves various subjects ( Oceanography, Atmosphere, Philosophies in Geography ) and can each read one specialized book on the selected topic to share what additional concepts it has or even share notes .
Example : I am reading Oceanography now . And I just came across the concept of
1) CCD : Calcite compensation Depth for the oceanic deposits
2) The names for various oceanic gyre circulation
N. Pacific : Turtle Gyre
S. Pacific : Heyerdahl Gyre
N.Atlantic : Columbus Gyre
S.Atlantic : Navigator Gyre
Indian Ocean : Majid Gyre
3) Though most of the western Continent basins are traversed by desiccating cold currents which cause dry conditions( <25 cm rain) . However due to excess built up of warm equatorial water in east indies part of pacific ocean a warm current ( LEEUWIN ) flows across west coast of Australia and is responsible for fair weather and 150 cm of rain .
Things like these could be discussed here which are difficult to be seen in general UPSC preparatory books .

Would like to request all to post any interesting funda they come across in geography as well .
In present attempt my practice of reading books for TOPICS cost me a lot of time . Hence requesting everyone to pool resources to help each other .
5) There are generally 5 reasons for upwelling .
a) Divergence of currents .
b) Coastal winds pushing water away from coast .
c) Offshore winds which blow from land to sea and push water away from coast .
d) Presence of underwater mountains or tablelands in way of coming water current.
e) Sudden sharp bends in coast line.

1. Oceanic surface currents due to rotation of earth and planetary winds - It affects the climate and air mass of the regions
2. Another is thermohaline circulation (i.e. thermal + haline ) - It supplies oxygen to the deep sea (downwelling) and bring nutrients from the bottom of the sea (upwelling)
One of the reaons given for changes in global temperature regimes is the milankovich cycle. It comprises of three type of changes in Earth's revolution around the sun .
1) Change in the eccentricity of Earth's Orbit .
2) Change in inclination of earth.
3) Precesson or wobbbling of earth like a top ( North pole pointing toVega star instead of present pole star )
These changes are used to explain the iceages on earth .

Concept 1: First of all there are two things that primarily affect biomass in oceanic biome. 1) Sunlight 2) presence of nutrients.
Concept 2: The cold sea water below the surface layer has more nutrients than the warm surface layer so when there is mixing of the tow (in upwelling zones etc.) the nutrient rich water body is formed however the creation of a sharp thermocline prevents mixing and hence the surface water becomes poor in nutrients.
a) Tropical Oceans: Unlike tropical rainforests, tropical oceans are biological deserts. Due to formation of a sharp thermocline at about 100m below the water surface, there is no mixing of nutrient rich bottom water and hence these have very low biomass productivity. In fact they are among lowest productivity zones on earth.
b) Polar oceans: Though no thermocline is present and the nutrient rich water is there as Atlantic deep water mass rises up near Antarctica, however the absence of sunlight is the main detriment. In summer-spring when sunlight is abundant, there is a sharp rise in biomass of phyto and zoo planktons. Total productivity is between temperate and tropical oceans.
c) Temperate oceans: The interplay of thermocline layer and the sunlight means that there are two speaks of productivity at spring and fall. The spring productivity is much more than fall. Rest of the year they have average productivity.
