Need your help guys, I never thought I'll ever give CAT but looking at the financial difficulties I am facing after 2 failures in UPSC, i have decided to give it a try. So pls tell me what are my prospects:

    Gen cat
    10th: 88
    12th: 84
Grad: B.Tech from JU with 6.5 GPA (2014)
Work ex: 2.5 years in IT sector as ASE
Unemployed since July 2017 (1.5 years now)

How to explain the year gap and what chance do I have even if I get above 95 percentile?

If you have never taken cat, you should start by checking the cut off percentiles for different colleges. Your GPA will hurt you badly. And if you want to convert any of the old iims, even 99 percentile isn't enough as a general candidate. You have to score above 99.5 to stand a chance.

As rightly said above , focus on scoring 99.5 and above in CAT and apply in fms delhi, mdi , imt as IIMs have huge wtage of Grad score and for general btech , they set grad cutoffs very high.

You can also apply for XLRI through XAT.
  • So i'm leaving off old iims because 99.5 up doesn't look feasible for now. What are the other options with decent opportunities? I have heard of imt and fms but not too sure whether i'd be accepted with my profile. XAT looks like only hope.

To convert decent colleges like fms, mdi etc you need to target 99 percentile. Even if you get a call below this, it'll be difficult to convert. Btw if you're solely preparing for cat in 2019, scoring 99 isn't that tough. The paper is much more objective compared to upsc. For reference, I scored 98+ without a single day of study this year. Didn't even get calls though because I didn't clear the gen DI cut off.
