Seems like UPSC out did itself in preparing a backbreaking Q Paper this time. Lets analyze the questions and discuss various possible sources for the various questions that have been asked.
seems like Pub Ad and Geography have become targets of UPSC from the past 2 years.. paper 2 I think was more of GS type...govt reports docs all can help..but paper 1 was quite difficult...and difficulty was not becos any vague concepts were asked. Rather it was more of unheard terms that made ques difficult e.g notogean realm, surges and seiches, coffee pattern, venezuela oil etc!
I now seriously think we shud start reading specific units in a more exhaustive way from various sources and not just from 1-2 books of savinder/khullar etc!
I m now more worried about whether to continue with it or go with conventional subjects like philosophy/sociology which have not yet received the wrath of UPSC!

I didn't write the exam this year but I have been preparing for a while. Paper I is shocking, but nevertheless I'll carry on with Geography. Its my first love and as Bob Dylan would have said it- will be my last.
Here's my take on specific issues at hand==> 1.Paper II is pretty much doable, so no need to be a sophisticated apologist there. 2. As for Compulsory Q's of Paper I, Seiches can be found in Penguin Dictionary. Venezuela Oil thing was in news as there was a major fire in its biggest refinery. Uniqueness of Fauna & Flora in particular realms had been asked in past- Short Notes should be prepared for all realms alongwith the alternative names for the same. Thanks to Fukushima, Kudankalam thing; Impact of ShutDown of Nuke Power in diff parts of World was also in news. 3. Smt. Ellen Churchill Semple & Shriman Misraji tells us that one needs to know some background of thinkers in Human Geo. Perhaps better sources for Human Geography ( atleast one foreign author & one Desi author) need to be located. (Please do Suggest some) 4. 'Types of Endemic Plants & vulnerability to extinction' tells me that details & short notes about Floral & Faunal regions need to be well prepared. 5. As for rest 5 Q's in Paper I, Its my view that one can corner 3 with atleast one from both sections without being totally raped in the process (for me, Its Q.2,3,6).
All in all, My Generic Take Away from Paper I -
1. Keep your eyes & ears wide open to current International Developments related to Geography ( resources, trade, industries, Enviro and so on). 2. Mug up the weird alternate names ofGeo. concepts & stuff- Google & Dictionary can help. 3. Environment, Ecology, Pollution, Resources (Basically the stuff that was hardly asked in past) need to be well prepared including current updates. 4. For Human Geography, Rural-Urban Geography- check out some other sources i.e. other than Majid Hussain & Made Easy (suggestions are most welcome).
Though I did not give the mains but I feel the papers are sort of highly applicative and mere knowledge or mugging will not do even in Paper II leave aside Paper I
