I am beginning my preparations for 2013 which is going to be my first attempt. The optionals that I have selected are pub and socio. after going through the threads here, the relevant info that i cud filter is that for socio i need mahapatra/upendra handwrittn notes..haralamboa & heald plus ncert and for pub ad - vajiram's notes plus prasad n prasad. (any addition to it would be welcome)
now i have two queries
a) since most of the coaching institutes start their batches in june..am not left with much options. i cant wait till oct to join the next batch as i cleared ssc last yr and i am expecting my joining by nov dec....so a lil guidance is needed here on the coaching aspect (am from delhi itself)
b) i would also be grateful if you guys cud guide me on the GS preparation.

1. Coachings start in June-Sept & Oct-March sessions. The second one caters to Pre-cum mains preparation. Its too late to join the June batch and too early to wait for October Batch. Your dilemma is natural.
But you also have the solution. Study from the sources you have in hand, and make your own notes. Thats what I did, and it is benefitting me. Even if you have some other teacher notes, write it in own handwriting, so that you are acquainted with each and every part of the notes, and DOnt just superficially read it.
You should know your notes & syllabus like a forest dweller knows the forest, not like how a forest officer knows it.
This is what you should do till October, November. Two important things to be kept in mind
* At the end of your optional preparation, you should know the syllabus by heart
* You should have made notes esp on those fring topics which are not given in standard books, but are there in standard books.
1. Read the Hindu daily. Make notes out of it by dividing it into 5-6 topics like Polity, Environment, IR, Economy, S & Tech
2. Begin full time preparation of GS only in November, not before that. Right now prepare your optionals at least 60-70%
3. You may join some classes in October, but if you don't follow the above preparation plan calendar
4. Dont worry about GS now, Post your GS query when the time comes! Dont overwhelm yourself with all the subjects at one go. Just do your optionals well.
Final word of suggestion
- When you study keep the syllabus close
- When you study, try solving prev year questions. They should be lighthouse that guide the ship of your preparation in the vast dark ocean.
- When you study, focus on what you are studying right now, rather than worrying about what you are not studying. Like thinking about GS while doing Pub Ad, and thinking about Socio when studying GS.

- Study as much as you can in the beginning, and write answers to prev year qestion papers, because only after studying 2-3 months and doing questions will you find for yourself what is really important, much like Budhdha found enlightment :-)

however, i am a lil unclear on a few points made by you..

-- i have left my job and am all prepared to put in as many hours as needed but i have no one to guide me. would i be lacking in my preparation as compared to those who have joined coaching?
--Yes, its vast. It can be done in 5-6 month provided you READ the newspaper daily
--you will not compromise on the quality of your preparation, because your answers will be different from others and will fetch marks for uniqueness
-- one disadvantage of not having coaching is that u wont have a peer group.
as for not having a peer group..i reckon forums like these would suffice
plus i have ncert and haralambos for socio..
any suggestions regarding a good pub ad book?
1) Buy Fadia for paper 1 and Fadia for paper 2. Dont read it back to back. Just select those topics which you didn't understand + those topics which are in syllabus but not given in notes
2) Buy Polli Naidu & Mohit Bhattacharya for Paper -1 and read selectively, for pleasure. Note down the gems that you get. For paper -2 , buy Rajni Goyal's book.
